X31 Ram Upgrade. Detailed Question about 'what ram to buy'
Hi there. Great forum.
Upgrading the RAM on my x31 2672. This is the first time I will have looked inside the guts of a machine.
I've had a read around the various topics about this and have ascertained that there is NO restriction on memory capacity, despite external sites out there saying that I can only max to 1gb.
SO - now that I know that I can swap out my 2 x 256mb cards and put in 2 x 1gb cards... I need to know exactly WHAT I am looking for online before I make my purchse. To be more specific - I want to make sure I buy the right thing/size etc..
IE - I have seen the terms DIMM and SO DIMM - I have see the terms ddr333(2700) and ddr400(pc3200) mentioned. I have also seen '200 pin' and '168 pin'
My question: Exactly WHAT should I be looking to purchase so it fits straight into my slots on my X31 2672 without a drama?
Is it a "ddr333 2700 200 pin SO DIMM"
If that is what it is.... what is the price range after tax that I should be looking at for each card. ($55 to $75)
Many thanks - Chris.

You need 200-Pin DDR SO-DIMM DDR 333 (PC 2700) Notebook Memory . I recommend Crucial.

Agreed. I just upgraded my RAM about 30 minutes ago...very easy...i have been looking around for a good deal on the 1gb sticks and finally broke down and bought the PNY sticks from BestBuy...1GB x2 works very well...

And, just in case you want to go "high on the hog" and install 2Gb of original IBM (made by Elpida in Japan) PC2700 memory with heatsinks and FRU numbers, you can PM me since I do have a matched set of these...

On the topic, I have an X32, with 2 sticks of 512. I want to put 2 GB in it. Are there any heat or power consumption issues to worry about?
What memory will work? I am pretty sure the PC-2700 is what it came with, but what will work. The older memory is actually just as expensive if not more so at times.

With a good laboratory you probably can measure a very small difference in power consumption. This hardly affects battery time. LCD, CPU and HDD use most of the power. RAM power consumption is of no concern.proaudioguy wrote:On the topic, I have an X32, with 2 sticks of 512. I want to put 2 GB in it. Are there any heat or power consumption issues to worry about?
With effectively identical power consumption there is no heat issue.

OK so I bought 2 of those. While I was at it I got one of those Lacie Big NAS drives. I hope it works well as a network share. I'm hoping to set it up as a RAID 1.Harryc wrote:You need 200-Pin DDR SO-DIMM DDR 333 (PC 2700) Notebook Memory . I recommend Crucial.

So I guess the new spec will be Pentium M 1.8GHz, 100Gig 7200, 2GB, Intel ABG. I do notice the intel card is weaker than the atheros card in my X60T.
I am selling an Atheros card that would work perfectly in an X31/X32. If you are interested. see this thread -

Well I'm not certain it will be an issue. I need to consider that though.Harryc wrote:I am selling an Atheros card that would work perfectly in an X31/X32. If you are interested. see this thread -

I might like to get that card for the A31 though. I'll mull it over.
The X32 will mostly be used connected directly to a hot rodded linksys wifi router. I use remote desktop to remote control the WIRED computer with another WIFI computer. It seems to be faster than using WIFI on both computers.

Works a charm
Sorry - been a while to get back on this - it works like a charm. No problems at all - much faster performance - not running any extra heat that Im aware of. Very happy.Harryc wrote:Let us know how the upgrade goes, and if you see any difference in performance after it is installed.
