Of course, it would have to be based on another distro, because starting from scratch is way too much work. I think the best ones to use as a base would be either Ubuntu/Kubuntu (one is for Gnome and one is for KDE), Fedora Core 4 (when it is officially released), or SuSE (do they allow 'latch on' distros? not sure...)
IMO From what i've seen in online forums, etc... a large number of laptop linux users are running thinkpads.
If anyone else thinks this should be done, i could put out a general bulliten in a few linux forums and see if any coders would volunteer their time
