fan noise?
fan noise?
aight guys now that we got the harddrive problem figured out..anyone else on the x61 have some pretty loud fan noise (both when powered and on battery?) On battery it seems to be less, but still there. It is definitely audible across a room... i've tried playing with the power setttings, but fan noise remains...

Mine's barely audible. I can hardly ever tell that it's on unless it's on max CPU for hours in the same spot on a desk.
I have heard that some people have this problem, though.

Download the Thinkpad Fan Control software for XP/Vista:
http://staff-www.uni-marburg.de/~schmitzr/tpfcserv.zip
This program will run in the background, monitoring the temperature of your CPU and GPU. It will set your fan to the appropriate speed depending on these temperatures. The default Thinkpad fan control is flawed and makes the fan run faster than necessary, so this software makes your fan much quieter.
These are the installation instructions for Vista:
unzip software to a temporary directory
open start menu
type cmd
right click on cmd.exe and select "run as administrator"
navigate to the directory you downloaded the files to
enter the "celsius" directory
type install
voila, the proper files will be copied to c:\tpfancontrol and the service will be installed. Note: you will not see any GUI - the software runs in the background.

It's safe. The software was written by a member of this forum. I've been using it for 3-4 weeks with no problems (and a much quieter fan). There have been no reported problems with the software so far. It works on all recent models of the Thinkpad (T4x, T6x, X6x series)scrawledinwax wrote:Xtal - is this safe? I too have a bit of a fan problem (random spin-ups and changes in speed).
Check this thread for details (troubadix is the author of the software):
