In need of help upgrading my 600X's cpu

#1 Post by rippaman77 » Tue Nov 20, 2007 3:24 pm

So far, everything is going well with my 600X. However, I still notice a slight drag when playing DIVX movies. Also, CPU usage stays at about 80-90%. I would like to upgrade the CPU. I have two questions regarding the upgrade:

1. This CPU looks like a good bargain and it's 750 MHz

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vi ... 0154737423

2. Is there any tutorial out there that shows step by step instructions on installing a new cpu in a 600X TP?

Please excuse me if this was already answered (I've read the official upgrade thread but I'm not 100% clear on making a decision)

Thanks for the help.

You can use the HMM for that. It's very easy. Keep in mind, however, that if you put a SpeedStep CPU in a non-speedstep motherboard, there will be issues.

I have one such machine. One has to generate an ACPI event at startup to get the machine past an apparent lock-up. I do this by pressing Fn+F2. You also have to choose a different CPU driver if running XP, or you'll have to press Fn+F2 very frequently.

That CPU is not compatible with a 600X. You need a MMC2 form factor CPU....see this Ebay item nbr 200175983602 for the ultimate in 600X upgrades..a 850MHz MMC2 or just punch in MMC2 in Ebay to get other CPU options.
Replacing the CPU means removing the keyboard and(gently )prying up the heat sink and CPU from its socket. (4 or 5 screws will need removing if I remember correctly)
Check the 600 HMM for details on parts location.
Just be prepared to have some minor issues if your 600X was not a speedstep model to begin with, when you do a processor upgrade.
There are numerous threads on 600 CPU grades that will probably answer all your questions

Just to continue on your DIVX issue, I'm kind of surprised you are having drag(choppiness?)

I use VLC player in both my 600/400Mhz and in my 600X when it still had its stock 500Mhz and I never had this issue . Yes CPU useage will is high, but I'm not doing anything else but watching the video.
Both machines run XPP and I do have the memory maxed out.

Try setting the color quality to 16 bit .

Thanks ms5133. The VLC player isn't consuming as much cpu usage as media player classic. I didn't even have to switch to 16bit. Choppiness isn't an issue when using VLC. I think I'll stay with my current CPU.
