I believe that with an dockingstation you can go up to 1600*1200, trough DVI connection.

I just ordered a 19" samsung
SAMSUNG 941BW Black 19" 4ms (GTG) DVI Widescreen LCD Monitor 300 cd/m2 500:1
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... &Tpk=941BW
from new egg, I don't have a docking station, just running XP. Am I going to be able to use it, my my laptop screen at once?
Is the 19" going to look like crap?
Thanks.

Yes, you'll be able to use it through your T42's built-in VGA port. Whether the screen will look like crap depends on how picky you are. Most people, including myself, don't notice a significant difference between VGA and DVI.

However, I wonder why you didn't get a 20" widescreen LCD. It's just a little bigger than 19" monitors, but has a higher resolution of 1680x1050 (the one you bought only has 1440x900). This not only gives you 36% more real estate, but also has the same vertical pixel height as your T42's SXGA+ screen. It may not be too late to cancel your order.

I have a Samsung 205BW, and I love it. Very crisp image, works great with the Radeon X300 in my T43. A bargain at $199 (Costco a few months back, with a rebate; YMMV).

Or really, why didn't you order a 22". It's the same pixel resolution as the 20" widescreens, but its 10% bigger and easier on your eyes. :) Newegg is selling a highly-rated Acer display for $199.

20" is cheaper and takes up less space. The fact that the OP initially ordered a 19" monitor suggests that s/he didn't want something too big.

I run a 24" Dell 2405FPW with my T43 & X300 graphics @ 1920 x 1200 via DVI from a simple dock. Works great, even with XP & Vista. Had this setup close to two years and couldn't be happier.

1920x1200 DVI resolution looks great from every T42 I've used(probably a dozen or so).
Apathy is on the rise, but nobody seems to care.

I just received the Acer 22'' and it is huge, I'm hoping that I run both screens, they height isn't the same as I thought it would be since they booth have 1050 as there vertical resolution. I'm in the process of updating my Video card driver ATI 9600 w/ 64mb I'm hoping that it will work. Any suggestions if it wont?
Thanks.

That's why I recommended a 20" monitor, which would be closer in size to the laptop.

Nope, that won't do anything.

So I have the 22" up and running this thing is huge! I'm questioning if I needed to go this big but it is very cool. Things look good.
How do people like their docking stations?

Both of my docks work just fine. Not much else to say really!

So it seems that when I move a window from my laptop to the external monitor it just gets bigger. Is there anyway to keep the window and text the same size as on the laptop, and thus gain more screen space?

Kuma hasn't said what the monitor is for. If it's for watching movies then bigger is generally better. If it's for doing work with computer applications then the pixel count is almost all that matters. I'm in the latter group and shopping for a monitor. I want the largest pixel count that my graphics card can support, in the smallest size screen. This means getting the screen having the smallest pixels. The pixels of this T42 screen are about 0.2 mm square. Unfortunately I can't find a big monitor with such small pixels.

Increase the resolution on your external monitor...

Two ways:

1) Lower the resolution of your T42 so that you get the same pixel density on both screens.

2) Put the external monitor farther away from your eyes.
