T23 LCD Pressure Marks

#1 Post by flashstar » Sat Nov 24, 2007 6:50 pm

Since I installed the new LCD on my T23, I have been getting massive pressure marks after leaving the lid closed for around half a day. I see a pressure mark where the trackpoint is and where the semi-circle around the left and right (mouse) buttons is. I also have other pressure marks where some of the keys are. This display hasn't been used much, so the pressure marks for the most part fade after leaving the display open for a few hours, but I don't want permanent pressure marks. What can I do to prevent this? Would it be practical to put some small cotten stand-offs on the edge of the laptop so that the lcd won't make contact with the keyboard?

Thanks!

You've touched on something that I think IBM should take some responsibility for. Inadequate clearance between the LCD and keyboard area.
I understand that the smallest, thinnest, lightest contest was on hot and heavy during the time when most Thinkpads were built, but the pressure marks are consistent with (I believe) all thinkpad models.

Your idea of cotton standoffs sounds good. I'm sitting here looking seriously at my T21, and there just might be enough room to try it. I suppose a pad that was about 1/8" wide X 1/2" long with the right thickness placed about 2 inces down from the top of the screen on each side just might do it.

I have access to some self adhesive heavy foam padding at work. I'll borrow a few scraps and see what happens. As long as the pressure is on the LCD edge and not the screen it could work.

I cut a small rubber stand-off into two identical pieces and then put them about two inches down from the top of the screen. The lid is a bit tougher to close, but it doesn't flex anymore and I can tell that the screen never gets too close to the keyboard since no new pressure marks have shown up.

Excellent!

How thick are the pieces? I just might do the same on mine. Also, watch for pressure marks near the stand-offs.

The pieces are 1/16th of an inch thick. I only had that size so I didn't really have any options, but it seems to work really well. I put quite a bit of pressure on the location where the rubber pieces are with my fingers but I noticed no rippling of the lcd or pressure marks. I'll make sure to watch out for new ones in that area though.

Btw, I had previously left the screen closed overnight for 10 hours with no new pressure marks.

Hope this helps. :)

yeah i have that on my t23 but the marks are kinda permanent. i wonder if theirs something to remove it and maybe i can get like a special cloth to protect it. the marks were annoying when i first got it, but ive grown use to it haha. but getting them out would be nice.

If you ever disassemble a screen, you'll soon see that the "keyboard" pressure marks are NOT, on the T20-22 stuff.

There are reinforcing casting grids, that add stiffness to the LCD back cover, that cause almost all of the"keyboard" pressure marks.

Now, the LCD back cover has those grids removed, and does truly get the keyboard (as well as mouse) pressure marks.
