Utility to change machine type

#1 Post by proaudioguy » Sat Nov 24, 2007 7:16 pm

I used to have a utility to change the machine type and serial number.

I can't find it.

Recently I replaced all the plastics on my A31 and threw away both the old bottom plastics that were cracked. I neglected to save the serial number, but I know the machine types. One was 2652-D3U and the other was 2652-D4U. One of the system boards was toast, while the other had recovered the deadly BGA issue. Well a few days after replacing all the plastics the BGA issue returned. I should have left well enough alone, but I thought maybe I could fix it again. Guess what? NO GO! Apparently reflowing the BGA once is a stroke of luck, but after that the balls are just too flat. I ordered a new used system board, but it had the same issue. It's going back. I also ordered a brand new system board with only 16 megs of video ram instead of the 32 megs to use int he second machine that I was going to give my 7 year old. Turns out this NEW board was indeed good, but of course it doesn't have a machine type or serial number.

I have bottom plastics for one machine that had a 14" screen, that has a machine type and serial, but I'd like something that matches my machine more closely. For now though I need the utility so I can use system update.

The details now are A31, 16 megs VRAM, instead of 32, 1 gig PC-2700, a 7200RPM HD, and a 2.2GHz CPU, with XP Pro. I plan to install a flexview screen as soon as I get my hands on one. I also replaced the LCD plastics with one that has the antennas, and I stuck a broadcom card I got from Underclocker in there. This machine is ALMOST brand new at this point.

Any idea what machine type I should use, and how do I come up with a serial number? Also can someone send me the utility so I can use System Update without error 75. Actually if I knew the name of the utility I might be able to search for it.

OK I finally found an old threat that named the utility, did a search on my hard drive and found it. I just could not remember the name to save my life.

I still need suggestions on what machine type and serial number to put in. Is there a way to find out my old serial numbers by way of previous registrations with IBM?

It's using the 1GET style firmware so I would want to stay in that family so as not to confuse potential future owners (pry it from my cold dead hands).

OK I have successfully used my original machine TYPE and the serial number form the bottom of one of the BASE plastics I recently purchased.

No more Error 75 with System Update!

I still want to get this more up to date, but I doubt there is an accurate configuration type available. Any suggestions?
