T6 w/ Vista Business turns itself off

Hello everyone,

Last night, I was trying to watch a movie (Prime Suspect) in my T60. I have watched movies in it before without a problem.
However, this time after two or three minutes of play time, the T60 would turn itself off, without a warning, error, or BSOD of any sort. This happened 3 or 4 separate times, and after the last one I just decided to go to bed.
It was as though someone had pulled the power cord and the computer had no battery.

I went to the event viewer and it only said that the "previous shut down was unexpected", and the event id was 6008.

By the way I am using K-Lite codec pack, as after the upgrade from XP Pro the codecs from WinDVD disappeared.
Any ideas are greatly appreciated. Thanks

Run TPFanControl while watching a movie and post back with the highest GPU and CPU temps, and fan speed seen before it shuts down.

I just tried running TPFancontrol with no luck. The Winio.sys driver would not run.

Nonetheless, the TP does not seem particularly hot. The bottom is ok. And like I said, I have watched other movies before without a problem. I will try with a different movie and report back. thanks for your help.

You have to run it as administrator. Right click on the .exe. You'll see the option.

Actually I did run it as an administrator.

In any event, I put on another movie and left it running while I took a shower, and it continued playing without a hitch. So it seems to be related to the movie itself (Prime Suspect).
Any ideas why this would happen? It seems odd.

A single movie that shuts down a Thinkpad? No idea... Anything red flagged in the system or application event logs?

What Harryc wanted you to do through TpfanControl was to measure the temperature of your machine. You can do that via another temperature measuring utility like NHC, PCWizard, SpeedFan, Mobmeter, Core temp etc. etc.

I have a t60p that i upgraded to Vista. A week ago i had the same issues. I was sitting there typing, and it shut down completely with no warning, and i wasnt out of battery. I assumed it was protecting it self from over heating, but dont know why it would be so hot. Using NHC, i constantly get CPU temps oevr 80 degrees idling.

That is a problem. It should really idle no more than 50*c give or take a few degrees. I'd recommend taking a look at the fan/cooling/contact with the CPU, thermal paste, etc. Granted T61's run a bit cooler, but mine idles at 40*C to give you a data point.

update,

I have now tried at least 15 other movies (in all likelihood more), and they all played fine. The only movie that seemed to have this effect was the "Prime Suspect" series. It did this even when I had just turned it on, and it did it within a couple of minutes of playtime. So the temperature angle seems unlikely (even though I was still unable to install TPFanControl.

In any event, I am sure it's those bloody British movies!
