Need advice/suggestions

hy
I have a T61, CPU T7300,2 Gb RAM, HDD 100Gb 7200rpm etc
The preinstalled OS is Windows Vista Basic, but I'm not very satisfied with it.
It is to slow( compared to XP), the boot time seems endless and it "eats" to much space on the HDD - in this moment, with only firefox and netbeans installed beside the preinstalled programs, I have already 38 Gb occupied

So I want to format my HDD, install XP SP2 and Ubuntu and install manually the drivers.
Would that be wise?

If yes, what utility programs( from lenovo) are more important(needfull), because there are quite a few on the support site...

In XP I install the power management driver and the battery maximizer program, that's it. Anything else depends on your needs.

Well, I am using on my T60p XP and very happy with the overall performance.

The Lenovo programs I have installed:

Presentation director
Power Manager
HD Active Protection system
Productivity Center manager
Fingerprint reader
Battery manager

They improve the useability without slowing down the system too much.

I have Intel Turbo Memory 1GB on my notebook.
Will XP use this feature at all, or I could remove it?

XP will not use that feature. In fact it's questionable how well Vista uses it

I only install:

Easy Eject
Hard Drive Protection
Power Manager
UltraNav

All the applications and drivers for your machine should be located in the SWTools folder on the C:\ drive. Most of the applications and some the drivers should work with XP. I spend as much time if not more in Gutsy as XP though I do miss being able to setup the pointstick to scroll.

what do you mean by "battery maximizer program"? On the lenovo site I found only

So, after I installed XP SP2, after I installed a bunch of drivers, I still have problems
This is my configuration:

One of them is the turbo memory I guess, but what about the others?!

Be careful with Ubuntu.
As I've just experienced lately, don't let Ubuntu write GRUB to the MBR record. It can kill your R&R functionality.
Plus, I was unable to even get the Live CD to boot on my T60 for both 7.04 and 7.10. I didn't delve into it far enough, but I think it was stopped by my ATI X1400 GPU.
I did have fair success with OpenSUSE 10.3 and even better was PCLinuxOS 2007.
Vista Home Premium ran pretty well on my T5600 with 1 GB of RAM and a 5400 RPM HDD. Especially after I killed a BUNCH of superfluous Vista services (I'll see if I can find the links later, but Google 'Vista services' to find all the ones that don't need to run, things like wacom tablet drivers).
Just a thought in case you want to "upgrade" instead of "downgrade".

I don't understand your problems with Ubuntu, since I read on this forum many apreciations about T60/61 with Ubuntu

No, even after XP's been installed, any Linux will be able to write to the MBR. Just make sure you choose to write the boot files to the Kubuntu partition, not the MBR which is usually the default.
As for my particular problems, I'm not sure. I've tried both K/Ubuntu and found them to be alright, but nothing special in the 'Nix world. They have their fans due to the simplicity, large hardware support base as well as the support community. Just not me. A complete system update in 7.04 completely broke my system twice. 7.10 has been a problem since it's initial release. I only tried installing them to check hardware compatibility with my T60. YMMV
With PCLinuxOS, the only thing I'm lacking is support for the TPM, which indirectly affects the fingerprint reader. Battery life with 'Nix is typically FAR behind Windows.
I wish Linux would at least catch up to Windows. Every time I try to leave M$ behind and stay with Linux, I keep crawling back for some reason or another.

Whichever distro you choose, make sure it writes to the Linux partition, not the MBR and you should be fine.

First install the Intel chipset .INF:
