Why do video & audio lose synch after YouTube upload??

I've uploaded a few videos to YouTube and for the most part, it's worked out fine. I do have a couple, however, that play perfectly on my computer, but once they're uploaded to YouTube, the audio and video are no longer in synch. My understanding is that this synch problem is not uncommon, but I've never read why it occurs and how to avoid it. Any thoughts?

I have uploaded 50 videos to YouTube, and I haven't had this problem, though I have seen the results that you are describing.

What are you using to create your videos? What kind/speed computer are you using to upload these videos?

I used VLC to make all my videos (the ones that stayed in synch as well as the ones that didn't). I'm making them on my Intellistation Z Pro, with two 3.2GHz Xeon processors, 2GB RAM, etc, it should be plenty of "power," and a 4MB cable connection (hard wired to router and cable modem - no wireless anywhere).

EDIT: Upload speed is only 512K, but this has been used for all my uploads (the ones that stayed in synch, plus the ones that didn't)

I would recommend trying Windows Movie Maker to make your videos instead. It puts them in WMV format which works really well with YouTube. I had a friend on YouTube that was having a problem with the audio, and Windows Movie Maker cured it.

Windows Movie Maker comes with XP and Vista, for free. Just remember to use the "Save to my computer" option in the left side bar, instead of the normal "File/Save As" route...

OK, I will give it a try... I'm running WIN2K, so I'll see if my kid's XP machine has Windows Movie Maker. Thanks!

I'm also going to look further into VLC to determine if it can export as a WMV. I find this program difficult to use (since I'm such a video newbie), but - with persistence - I have gotten good results from it.

This overall issue remains baffling to me, however, since the YouTube "behavior" is not consistent. I make my videos the same exact way each time. Maybe 85% of the time there are no problems, but that remaining 15% experiences the synch issue.

Or are you running Win2K on that system? I guess I assumed that a system that fast would be running XP or Vista...

Yes, I'm running WIN2K on my Intellistation...

Last night, I played around a bit more with this particular video. It shows up as running 3:04 on YouTube, yet the file runs 3:47 on my computer before upload.

I then tried converting the same file to an mpeg-4, uploaded it, and it runs almost correctly on YouTube... it runs 3:47 like it should... the audio and video are only very slightly out of synch.

Normally, I would be irritated by something like this, but it's so incomprehensible to me that I find it interesting.

Later today, I'll try Movie Maker on my kid's machine.
