favorite mp3 editing software?

#1 Post by Billmanweh » Mon Nov 26, 2007 7:09 pm

I only need something to edit a few things, so ideally something free would be great. I just found a few mp3s that need the tags changed and I also have a few that are two short mp3s that need to be joined into one longer file.

Suggestions?
T60 2008-DD3, 2.00GHz, 3GB, 80GB HD, DVD-CDRW, Intel 802.11 a/b/g

I've used Winamp to go in and change ID3 tags. From the playlist window, right-click on the song and choose "View file info...". Fill in/edit the fields and then click the Update button.

For some editing of audio files I use Audacity. You will also need to download the LAME MP3 encoder if you want to export the files to MP3 format.

Both free :) .

For mp3 tags, I first run the files through MusicBrainz (I like the classic tagger) which tries to tag them automatically. When that's done, I open them all in Mp3Tag to manually add/edit the latest tags. Mp3Tag has features like "filename to tags", "tags to filename", "convert all tags to lowercase, every first letter uppercase",... which makes the work a whole lot easier.

Windows Media Player offers this feature as well. You can right click on a file and select "Advanced Tag Editor".

i tried it. its horrible... i really do like Windows Media Player and I even use it to play my mp3s however I allow Steve Jobs (iTunes) to do tagging for me.
btw I tried editing tags in the newest version of WMP. then I got rid of WMP11 and got myself older version 9. I didn't try editing since then so maybe you are using older version as well. If so let me know which one.

Sony made a program called soundforge awhile back that you might find really cheap. I really liked it and did alot of stuff with it.

I use J. River Media Center. It handles it all — pictures, documents, music, video etc. It is a really great program. There is a free version too, called J. River Music Jukebox. Check it out here:

I agree that Sound Forge is a very good and intuitive software. Many times, a lot of software gets bundled as OEM versions with other stuff, and it might be worth looking into that, as you might save money doing that.

Also, I should point out that you should always try to avoid re-encoding mp3 files, because it is a lossy format and it potentially (but not always) degrades with each reencode (as opposed to encoding from the original source, for example a wav file.)
