I was excited to receive my new T61 yesterday and so far I am loving it! Thanks to this forum I think I got the right one for myself - a "low end" T61 as I only need for Internet and Microsoft Office work etc. The only upgrades I did were the memory to 2GB and HDD to 120GB. I didn't get other upgrades also because of the noise, heat, and battery life problems I heard from many posts in this forum. So far the machine is just cool and quiet.
I am posting here to let interested people know that I am very happy with the XGA resolution (very easy on my eyes and no more squainting or frequent "make text bigger" adjustment). I am also very happy with the 14" standard screen -- every web page fits just nicely on screen. I feel I have come back to the "basics" after one year of using a Macbook which was a great machine but I didn't enjoy using it as much due to the widescreen thing. It was sad to me that in retail stores you don't see a standard screen any more.
I also have a question and perhaps somebody can answer me before I call Lenovo. I ordered 120GB HDD but I checked the system info in the machine - it says total space of HDD is 105GB and 83GB free. I wonder why the total space is not 120GB. Did I miss something?
Thank you.
I like XGA resolution and Standand Screen and a question

105GB sounds about right for total space.
120GiB is the size of the drive: (at least) 120,000,000,000 bytes
Windows shows that as 111.76GB (120GiB/1024/1024/1024). There's also a small (6GB?) partition for Rescue and Recovery, so 105GB sounds completely normal.
And welcome to the forum!

Re: I like XGA resolution and Standand Screen and a question
HDD capacity is always less and differs from the advertised size by a few GB's. This is due to the different measurements (Base 2) used by HDD manufactures (1000 MB per GB). Your computer uses the correct measurement (1024 MB per GB).OptionsCharm wrote:snip....I wonder why the total space is not 120GB. Did I miss something?....snip
