NAV 2004 Question

#1 Post by kjarrett » Sun Nov 14, 2004 1:04 pm

I plan to "re-up" with NAV once the 3-month trial runs out.

This software is all over ebay for next to nothing, yet Symantec wants $25-$30 for either a subscription or upgrade to NAV 2005.

I'm fine with 2004. Can I buy a copy off ebay and then just use that key to renew, or am I going to have to uninstall/reinstall?

TIA,

Norton Symanetc Products just fine with me

#2 Post by t41user » Sun Nov 14, 2004 1:56 pm

Most Norton products tell you to uninstall any previous versions before new installation. However, I usually do not do an uninstall first and usually find that the new Norton product install will uninstall the old one for you. You might notice that most individuals who work a lot with computers say lots of bad things about Nortion products, such as NAV. For all I know, they may be right, but I ran NAV Professional for the past year and had no problems (not too slow, nothing more than a tiny bit of memory usuage, nothing more than an occasional tiny power usage, and so on). I recently purchased and installed Norton Internet Security 2005. I have no complaints and I recommend it. It includes NAV 2005, Firewall Protection, AntiSpam, and some additional security stuff that may or may not be needed. At the end of the year when I need to pay for a new update subscription, I usually pay for a new box version that comes with the latest version on CD as well as a new one year update subscription.

I think the direct answer to your question might be that you need to do an install of the new product in order to get whatever update subscription comes with that new product (even if the new product is the same version as the old product).

Thanks. I think you're basically onto it - uninstall/reinstall. I'd really rather not go that route, but, we'll see.

I've been hearing people [censored] about NAV since the 90s. I personally have never had a problem and would never use anything else. I think people have a bad experience with Norton becuase they install all the resident "crap" that's available when you buy the full suite. Bleh! I've never done that. I have nothing in my tray except the bare minimum. I'm not a big fan of NIS, and much prefer Zone Alarm Pro. So between them both (NAV/ZAP), I'm more than good to go.

Thanks for your input!
