t43 memory

#1 Post by ariel_lh » Wed Nov 28, 2007 6:53 am

Hi,

I have a T43 2668-46U and i want to upgrade the original 512MB of RAM.

The question is: should i get another 512MB RAM to take advantage of dual channel or just get 1GB stick for a total or 1.5GB? And in case i go with the dual channel option, do i need to buy the IBM one (73P3842) or just any memory with same specs will do?

thanks

No you do not need to buy the IBM branded memory unless you like paying more. Corsair, Kingston and Crucial are top brands though I have always have had good luck with off brand memory. I have Patriot memory in my R60 right now.

I think the important thing is to get more memory. Dual channel offers a small performance boost. It's not very noticeable in my experience though I suppose it would depend on your needs.

You have a fine machine and maxing out the RAM would be money well spent...

The prices of RAM have dropped significantly, and you can use PC5300 instead of 4200 in your T43 and bring the expense down a bit more...and you will notice a difference once those 2Gb (hopefully) kick in....

Take it from someone who always maxes out the RAM on his machines...sometimes just to make himself feel good on a bad day... ...and yes, I do have 2 T43s with a lot more RAM than they've left the factory with...

Yes, it will simply underclock to PC4200 speed.

Buying two new 512mb sticks would probably give you a slight performance boost over a single 1gb stick, but it will also consume a tad bit more power. If battery life is of no real concern to you, I would recommend getting two new 512mb sticks on ram. If you are more concerned than the average person about battery life, then go with a single 1gb stick.
