Trackpoint 4.52, wdf01000.sys and bsod

Hello, friends!

I have an X31 (2672-RHU) runnung WinXP Pro 2002 SP2.

I recently ran System Update and was greeted by a BSOD with reference to the file wdf01000.sys.

Unfortunately, I couldn't immediately figure out what update caused the problem.

In Safe Mode, I uninstalled Rescue and Recovery and Client Security Solution first (I don't really use them).

After another BSOD, I renamed wdf01000.sys, rebooted and uninstalled the latest TrackPoint driver (v. 4.52).

Although the documentation says WinXp is not supported, I downloaded and installed v. 3.55 of the TrackPoint driver.

All seems well for now.

My questions:

Since wdf01000.sys is some type of Microsoft trust driver, I am worried that I might need it in the future (especially if I decide to upgrade to Vista -- video driver issues aside). Is there some way to make this file play nice?

Is there any way to install the v. 4.52 driver without getting a bsod?

To that end, is it possible that there is some other configuration issue that is causing the BSOD with wdf01000.sys (something else I should try)?

Are other people having problems with this driver?

Welcome to the forum.

This came up in the X6 forum today Warning on the new TrackPoint Driver.
Stick with the old driver for the moment. (The bad one has been removed by Lenovo)

The X61 user went back from a version 4.62 to the version 4.52 driver referred to by cshooshan..... so its not the same issue at all.

Thank you for catching the differences! I did not know about the X61 driver problems but it seems that 4.62 caused the BSOD for X61 and now those users can go back to 4.52 without problems.

My situation is that for the X31, the 4.52 driver was the latest posted and it caused the BSOD on my machine (both 4.52 versions are the same driver).

I had to go back to 3.55 which is not recommended for WinXP (only Win2000) on my WinXP X31.

So, my original posts stands. Anybody else with problems or solutions with the 4.52 driver?

I am also getting crashes, caused by wdf01000.sys.

It happens when I try using any user account apart from my standard one I use all the time. The default admin account immediately crashes when I try going into it, and even new accounts I try to make.

What makes you think that wdf01000.sys has got something to do with the Trackpoint driver?

I am using an X31 and I have Trackpoint driver v4.62.0.0 installed.

Revert back to v4.52.

Mouse/TrackPoint - Thinkpad X31.

Thanks. That solved the problem.

I wonder how v4.62 got installed by System Update when the others here are going on about v4.52 being the latest version, and one that is giving problems, when it is the solution for me.

Currently v4.52 is the latest, v4.62 was previously the latest one which has since been removed by lenovo after different BSOD and crashing problems were reported.

I'm having bluescreens even with 4.52 on my ThinkPad X61. This can be reproduced with a two-user setup:

Log in as one user
Switch user
Log in as other user
Run Task Manager
Frequent bluescreens (most usually due to wdf01000.sys STOP 0x0000010D)

Anyone have a workaround for this, or a suggested effective way of reporting to Lenovo?

"STOP 0x0000010D" is not limited to Trackpoint drivers:

Bug Check 0x10D: WDF_VIOLATION.

I know, but it only happens when I have the TrackPoint drivers installed. Since uninstalling them I have had no bluescreens.

I have the same drivers installed on a machine but don't have two users setup so I can't confirm it however if you ever installed v4.62 previously then uninstall v4.52 first then use a good registry cleaner before reinstalling them again.

I never had 4.62 installed. I manually installed the drivers from the Lenovo driver matrix.

I think I have some other instability issues with a two-user setup that are related to Lenovo-supplied drivers. Perhaps they do not test a fast user switching setup well anymore? I don't know.

How did you manage that? If you are using XP, you should have the default Administrator account as well as your user account as well. Ideally, the account you normally use should not have administrator privileges. If everybody did this, they would never have made that UAC travesty in Vista.

I use three user accounts on my computers, and have not seen this on my Thinkpads. Does this still happen if you turn off Fast User Switching and run apps as other users using RunAs?

I've installed WinDbg and the bluescreen errors were definitely due to TrackPoint drivers:

Probably caused by : tp4track.sys ( tp4track+1c9a )

Just to be clear, I am referring to an entirely separate issue. This other issue is that if I log on both accounts with Fast User Switching, sometimes when I log out of one account the screen turns black and the machine will not accept input. It is similar to the issue described here:

But I already have SP2 so the suggested hotfix will not install. There are a lot of Userenv errors in the event log. I am trying the UPHClean service to see if it will stop these errors, or at least help me track them down.

I'm running Windows Vista and it shows me to be an only user in the User Accounts.

michaelhoffman, all I can suggest you is to revert back to v4.0. You can find it under C:\SWTOOLS\DRIVERS\TRACKPT\SETUP if you've lenovo preloaded image.

I have recently been plagued with the problem that you describe. I think it happens when I have a couple of disconnected accounts logged in, whilst using another. I cannot find out what exactly is happening, but I see multiple warnings for Tp4Track in the Event Viewer/System log.

I currently have Trackpoint v4.64 installed, but I will try to find v4.52 somewhere, to see if that helps. I already have the UPHClean service installed.

Did you ever find out more about what was causing this?
