In light of recent scattered battery explosions and fires I for one am glad to see a large company like IBM step up and go after the counterfeiters. Who knows how they make these batteries or if they are safe for use.

I say, too right, take 'em to the cleaners.
I often get asked if there are cheaper alternatives to original parts, my answer is always; "I don't know of any, if you find one and buy it, then have a problem, do not call me"

What surprised me the most is a company like IBM, taking their time to order up some batteries after learning of a claim, doing their own investigation, finding out the truth, then pursing it. Normally, in a story like this, Id hear the reply "Sorry, you didnt have a genuine part so you are on your own." Great job to IBM and its one of the reasons that they have my patronage! All my computer purchases, and all my recommendations are always thinkpads!!!!

Although it is worth noting that sometimes even genuine parts (Apple/Sony/Dell) are dangerous. In those cases the companies tend to be responsible enough to replace them (although funnily enough that can be country-specific  ), but if you've already lost your hand or your house...

I know that IBM/Lenovo are good when it comes to this kind of stuff, I just meant that certain companies in certain territories will do things like ask you to pay for example postage to ship their faulty equipment to them.
