thinkpad 701c battery problem

it works ok with the bettery eliminator unit .
the built-in battery charger doesnt seem to work , so i used a commercial one .
i charged the battery to 11.3 volts ., externally .
now when i put the bettery in & turn it on , the power led comes on , but within 2 seconds it gives off 3 short beeps & turns off .
there is no listing in the manual for 3 beeps .
the battery only went down to 11.1 volts .
any ideas ? WALT
