Help! Lost My Wireless Modem

#1 Post by Roadster » Sun Dec 02, 2007 2:08 am

Please help! In the process of trying to update my wireless driver, I screwed something up. Now my 11a/b/g Wireless LAN Mini PCI Express Adapter is no longer working properly.

Every time I attempt to uninstall from Hardware / Device Manager, the reinstallation process keeps coming up with an error... "The device cannot start (Code 10)." More importantly, the wireless modem option seems to have disappeared from the Fn-F5 Wireless Radio options, and I cannot get it to re-appear. Finally, the "Power On Wireless Radio" option has disappeared from my ThinkVantage Productivity Center's Quick Links. (The bullet point in the Quick List is there, like a placeholder, but the text description is now gone.)

The update that I attempted to install was one that showed up under Latest Downloads under my model number (8741-W1C)...

http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... MIGR-67612

After I attempted to install it, I realized that I screwed up. Now I can't figure out how to recover from this error. I just did a complete restore of my hard drive from a backup made last weekend. Unfortunately, the problem is still unresolved... same Code 10 error on installation, the wireless modem is still not shown in the Fn-F5 Wireless Radio options, and the "Power On Wireless Radio" link is still missing from the ThinkVantage Productivity Center's Quick Links.

Please help me recover from this stupid mistake! Thanks in advance for any assistance you can provide.

Have you tried installing the following package after the restore, 1st:

Modem driver for Windows Vista (32-bit and 64-bit), XP, 2000 - ThinkPad R60, R60e, R61, R61i, T60, T60p, T61, T61p, X60, X60s, X60 Tablet, X61, X61s, X61 Tablet, Z60m, Z60t, Z61e, Z61m, Z61p, Z61t, ThinkPad Reserve Edition.

The package named 7fma10ww.exe will unpack itself in C:\DRIVERS\HDAMODEM\Setup.exe and you would need to go there manually to install and run the actual setup then.

EDIT: I see by wireless modem you meant you NIC, please try to install the following package first:

Wireless LAN adapter software (ThinkPad 802.11bg, 802.11abg) for Windows XP and 2000 - ThinkPad.

The package named 7rwc08ww.exe will unpack itself in C:\DRIVERS\WIN\WLLANATH\SETUP.EXE and you would need to go there manually to install and run the actual setup then.

I've tried that particular update file several times tonight. Unfortunately, I keep getting the same error.

The 'Cisco Limit Client Power Option Patch' is a firmware patch/update that you did to the LAN adapter in your machine that obviously failed. Call for service to replace the 802.11a/b/g WIFI adapter. Maybe they have a way to flash the original firmware (if you are lucky).

Harry, you're probably right. When I run System Update, the program doesn't notice anything, and no other downloads are suggested. However, when I attempt to run PC-Doctor 5 for Windows, the entry under System and Device Tests for the 11a/b/g Wireless LAN Mini PCI Express Adapter says "Misconfigured" in place of the "Run Test" link available on all the other communication devices. When I click on "Device Information", the following information prints out (see below).

Can somebody here please compare this output to their own output under PC Doctor 5 for Windows?

That turned out to be the case. I thought the "Cisco" reference was to wireless routers, not to the wireless LAN adapter itself. Whatever the reason, that's what hosed by adapter. So I bought a new one from Amazon...

http://www.amazon.com/Lenovo-ThinkPad-W ... 303&sr=8-1

Got it delivered in 2 days, and installed it successfully in my hotel room. Best $49 I've ever spent.
