Winter has come with a vengeance!

#1 Post by jdhurst » Sun Dec 02, 2007 11:35 am

Yesterday, the weather gurus were pointing to a colder winter than any since 1994 around here.

This morning, I woke up to a blanket of wet snow 8 inches deep as far as the eye could see (across the road in the urban city :) )

Now, some years ago (1985 IIRC), the chartered bean counter amongst five us (good neighbours then and now) called a meeting at the local pub, and suggested we jointly purchase a snowblower.

So we did. In 1985, we bought a behemouth of a machine: 10 Hp on a 26 inch cut with 2 stage augers and large tires with chains. Solid, heavy gauge steel construction.

We service it, and it continues to serve us well. It woke up with 2 solid pulls on the starter and did its job well. The snow is gone from the driveways and the sidewalks.

We remain five good neighbours. ... JDH

I awoke to approx. an inch of the dreaded white stuff this morning. An hour later the temperature had risen sufficiently that it had all melted and no greenhouse gases were released in the removal!

The threatened snowstorm here in NE-PA has not (yet) materialized.
I woke up around 8.00am from the noise of something scraping. Turned out to be our friends from 1/2 mile up the road, who have a Chevy Silverado with snowplow. Unasked they cleared our driveway of about 4" of snow.
Good friends indeed!
Lovely day for a Guinness! (The Real Black Stuff)

Yesterday we had the freezing rain. There were trees and power lines down all over town. I had to go outside and get an evergreen branch off of the cable wire or else I would lose TV and internet. The girls didn't want to lose TV.
Overnight it warmed up and melted all the ice off. Today it is almost dry.

This time of year I think of this:

Winter is icumen in,
Lhude sing Goddamm,
Raineth drop and staineth slop,
And how the wind doth ramm!
Sing: Goddamm.
Skiddeth bus and sloppeth us,
An ague hath my ham.
Freezeth river, turneth liver,
Damm you; Sing: Goddamm.
Goddamm, Goddamm, 'tis why I am, Goddamm,
So 'gainst the winter's balm.
Sing goddamm, damm, sing goddamm,
Sing goddamm, sing goddamm, DAMM.

indeed it did hit me hard. i've been getting sick twice a week for the past two months because of this weather. my body for some reason couldn't adjust to poland after 10 years in california. that is until last week... 3 gilrs from physical therapy persuaded me to go out on a 20 minute walk (while it was snowing) in a plain T-shirt. this thing worked a miracle... not only i never got sick since then but I don't feel cold as often as I used to.

1 car down. 1 to go...
My wife's car did a 360 degree spin and more and ended up in the ditch. Wife OK. Within minutes there were 6 men trying to help her back on the road.
A/C radiator smashed, front bumper and grill in bits. Rest of car still drivable.
So much for local roads in the backwoods of (Thornhurst) Pennsylvania.

Glad to hear that she is okay. Brings back memories of me hitting a patch of "black ice" and spinning my Mazda 626 into a tow truck AND the RX-7 he was pulling out of the shoulder on I-5 in Washington  . Luckily, nobody got hurt.

6" of snow in the Sullivan County Catskills... temperature is dropping, and we are getting busy at work. We have sleet and freezing rain on the way here currently, and I have to be out the door at 5:30 am to get to Binghamton tomorrow morning for work stuff.

April couldn't get here fast enough.

A bit of snow over here, nothing major. I kind of miss the lake effect we'd get down in Niagara. It started raining during the day and the temperature keeps on going up. Currently everything is half slushy, but if the temperature dips overnight there may be carnage in the morning, which I'm kind of hoping for - I could really use an extension on stuff due at school tomorrow...

And again today - two weeks later. Miles of snow as far as the eye can see and still coming down. The last dump was gone from the streets but still on my lawn and garden. Now there are piles of it. At least it was two Sundays and not two workdays. ... JDH

We started out Tuesday morning with 1.5 inches of freezing rain. It brought down trees and power lines all over the region. Then it stayed in the single digits to teens all week and we got 5 inches of light fluffy snow this weekend. Nothing like snow on top of ice.
We have had power crew come from as far as Indiana to help get the power on. Everybody just went home late this afternoon. They have been working 20+ hour shifts for 5 days! They need some rest now. It is supposed to get above freezing tomorrow and for a few more days. Maybe my trees will stand back up!
