I've been assigned to find a nice laptop for my mom. And she likes the look and feel of my ThinkPads, so that what I'm getting her.

The requirements are:

14.1" LCD (XGA)
DVD-ROM or combo drive
40GB+ 5400RPM HDD
Good battery (2hrs+)
Internal WiFi
A port replicator would be nice, but it's not a must.
It doesn't need to have RAM, I have spares.

$300 is the budget I have. I was thinking of maybe a T40 or T41. She doesn't need anything too powerful, and integrated graphics would be fine.

I don't know anyone's mom that wants an SXGA+ screen. You might want to stick with the XGA for mom.

It's almost impossible to get a nice 15" unit with SXGA+ for under $300 anyway.

You guys must've read my mind. She now wants a 14.1" T4x with XGA. She'll be using an external monitor when she's in her office anyway.
