T61: not charging when connected to AC & phantom AC adap

#1 Post by davecl » Sun Dec 02, 2007 7:09 pm

In the last few days, my T61 stopped charging its battery. I originally thought my battery went bad, but I've also noticed that the computer always thinks it's connected to an AC adapter... even when it's not.

For example, the system doesn't beep anymore when I unplug it. When I goto the Power Manager screen it always says it has a 90W connected even though I don't have a 90W adapter (and it's not connected). Even with the machine powered off (and unplugged), the battery light is orange (and blinks) and the plug light is always lit.

I tried reinstalling the power manager drivers, but the problem still exists. Any ideas?

Thanks.

Typos corrected.

Sounds like you need a battery replacement, obviously the symptoms you mentioned occur while running the machine on battery only.

The following troubleshooting instructions from lenovo could be worth looking into:

Troubleshooting battery issues - ThinkPad.

Troubleshooting power management issues - ThinkPad.

If the replacement battery does not solve this issue then the problem could be related to the internal circuitry of the planar card that connects power supply to the power jack of the machine.
