Power On to Desktop---70 seconds!

#1 Post by Grumpy » Mon Nov 15, 2004 12:07 pm

Recently bought an R51 and am very disappointed with the slow boot up. Hard to believe it could be the slow HD (4200 rpm) on the R-series, but thought I'd ask you T-Series users if your boot times are significantly faster.

I bought an 1836-Q7U (1.7Mhz /512MB) which boots in 70 seconds. My old TP600 (P2 300Mhz) boots in 80 seconds. My P4 2.8Mhz desktop boots to the same point in 27 seconds.

I know there's alot of variables and I can delete some of the processes, but can I tweak things enough to get the boot-to-desktop times down in the 30-40 second range without sacrificing needed Thinkpad programs? System has XP SP-2 and running on AC power with full charge.

Here's the boot scenario elapsed times:

Power ON----------------0 seconds
IBM Logo-----------------5 seconds
Win XP Logo------------11 seconds
Black Blank Screen----34 seconds
Welcome Screen-------45 seconds
Desktop Screen--------70 seconds

hmmm...not the answer I was wanting to hear. I wonder what it is about laptops that require 300% more overhead...

Do a clean install and get rid many of the tp processes that aren't really needed if you care that much about start up. Mine takes about 50 seconds to load but once it loads it runs really fast. I don't so much mind since I rarely start my computer, you might want to hibernate more often, the computer is off, but the startup is much faster (about 20 seconds) and you don't have to close any apps or save before shutting down.

Yup. Mines always in hibernate, so the "bootup" is great. Now, when I restart my computer, or actually do shut it down, it seems like it takes years to boot up. I love me some hibernation...

YOur boot up time will depend a lot on the stuff that are installed in it. I did a clean install on my computer over the weekend ad it boots and shuts down much faster.

Can you define "much faster"? How long from POR to the desktop?

These are my times to boot up.

4 sec IBM logo
13 sec Windows Logo
35 sec Welcome
40 sec Desktop

10 sec to shut down

All done w/ AC adaptor and I cleaned installed with SP2. I don't know if SP2 makes any difference or not.
It is definitely booting faster than when I had factory setting.

Factory settings make for slow bootup. I think it still takes about 70 seconds to load everything on my ThinkPad (Battery Maximizer, Access connections, Symantec Antivirus Corporate).

I just use Hibernate to shut down the system. That takes less than 20 seconds when shutting down or turning back on.

daeojkim,

That sounds better! I didn't want to go thru the hassle of a clean install for little gain, but I'd be happy with 40 seconds. How many processes are running now? Did you add many IBM programs back?

When I boot I am running about 40 processes.
My laptop has 40GB 5400 rpm so that probably makes boot time quicker than 4500 rpm HD.

After clean install, IBM softwares that I installed were Thinkpad software Installer, which I used to install HD active protection and others that were included in Acess IBM software, e.g. battery mazimizer, easy eject etc. I am not using the network configuration software that was installed from factory, I think it was slowing my system and it actually took longer to conect to my other computers. Without it wireless networking seem to run smoother.

Got rid of hidden partition. So now I have abot 3GB extra space.

I used omega drivers for graphics and downloaded all other latest drivers from IBM website.

I am using AVG Antivirus. It is free and it seems to be pretty popular.

After installing and updating all of Windows components, then installing Office, Firefox, and other stuff, I defragmented the HD until there were no red visible.

it was a long process... but the results are extremely satisfactory.. :)

BTW I followed guideline to clean install that is in the sticky post in this forum. It worked great!!

what are Omega video drivers on T42?

what good does it do?

thought T42's native ATI drivers are already the best/optimized?

You can download it from here

I don't know what exactly is better than IBM drivers but it worked just fine for me. I have not done any bench marks with it though

I installed the Omega drivers when I was having some video issues. Then, after I realized it wasn't the drivers, I just went back to the stock ones. It didn't seem to make a bit of difference, though I have heard of many people using other drivers rather than the stock ATI's.

Some games didn't run with the factory drivers for me, but with the Omega ones they did. Plus you have the Catalyst options, but I didn't use those.
