T42: no Standby or Hibernation

#1 Post by sagara » Mon Dec 03, 2007 9:09 am

I can't get my T42 to enter either Standby or Hibernation. I've tried via settings in both Thinkpad Configuration/Power Management and the Battery Maximizer Wizard - it won't even go into Standby from Start/Turn Off Computer/Standby! I did install a new Seagate 100GB 7200rpm HDD recently using Acronis True Image to clone my standard 40GB HDD, but I've had no other problems since other than this Standby/Hibernation issue. :(

I forgot to add that I run both NHC and TFC, none of which has given me any problems.

Interesting, I haven't tried hibernate but I've been having troubles with a couple of thinkpads and a Toshiba laptop ignoring the standby setting. Not totally predictable. I was wondering if it might be some new update in Windoze (I don't use the Thinkpad updater).

Look in the event log. Probably there is a driver that won't standby.

Here's what the Event Log says when I try to Hibernate, which fails, then I reboot:

Windows saved user SAGARA\Sagaramati registry while an application or service was still using the registry during log off. The memory used by the user's registry has not been freed. The registry will be unloaded when it is no longer in use.

This is often caused by services running as a user account, try configuring the services to run in either the LocalService or NetworkService account.

It's a bit 'foreign' to me!

Not much help to me either. Is this a new problem?

Yes, it's new. I tried using System Restore back to two weeks ago, but this has no effect. But this made me wonder just what does System Restore, restore?

I've also just noticed that when using Access IBM, when the screen comes up it is 'dead'. So I uninstalled it - but made no difference.

Here's another oddity: When I press Fn-F4 , rather than Hibernate I now get the Turn off computer! screen - and, of course, Restart and Turn Off work, but not Standby!

Opps - selecting Restart actually puts it into Standby. Then when I press Fn it restarts, then comes up with a small Windows Closing Down screen, and then reboots. Strange behaviour.

Just to wind this up, I managed to fix it: my intuition was that Windows was the problem, so I booted up the T42 with my own XP SP2 CD (IBM version was installed) and went through the 'Repair' selection. It took a while, and I was wondering if it was not simply doing a clean install of XP. But when it finished everything was OK: no more Standby or Hibernation problems!

So, it is worthwhile having a spare XP CD as I'm not sure whether one can do a 'Repair' using what's in the IBM Service Partition.
