question: wireless drivers

#1 Post by Marin85 » Wed Dec 05, 2007 10:03 pm

Hi,
what is the difference between the following drivers:

IBM 802.11a/b/g, 802.11b/g Wireless LAN Mini PCI Adapter

and

ThinkPad 802.11a/b/g/n, 802.11b/g/n Wireless LAN Mini PCI Express Adapter

I found them both in the driver matrix (for Z series) on the Lenovo site. How can I find out which one applies to me (as I intend to make a clean install of Vista)?

Marin

EDIT: I didn´t post this in the Z series forum because the same seems to refer also to T series, I think. If any links or additional information needed, just ask :)

Welcome to the forum

The differences are to do with frequencies and speed, there is no end of information in the forum if you search for it.

if you go to this site and enter the type and model number of the Z61p you have, it should tell you which wlan card you have.
The type and model number consists of 4 numbers plus 3 letters or numbers e.g. 0674-GEG. You might also want to enter this in your signature. This will help the community see what you have should you post any other questions.

Thanks for your reply, andyP :) That´s exactly my point. After entering type and model number I´m stil offered both drivers. I tried their XP versions on a clean install of XP some time ago, and if I recall correctly, they seem to exclude each other (which is also to be expected) and both seem to work properly. That´s why I am confused a bit. Maybe it´s just a matter of taste which one to pick (the one has IBM in his name, the other - ThinkPad)

Regards

Marin

EDIT: Now I remember: after downloading the both wireless drivers I compared the file names of the packeges (before unpacking) and they were exactly the same. So I guess those are just two different names for the same thing. This would explain a lot except maybe for the reason why Lenovo had to put it twice on their site :) Grüße, Marin

EDIT: Well, the benefit is that it can´t be overseen that easily when it´s put there twice... So maybe it´s a part of Lenovo service to assure that the customer will get his wireless working at any rate
