Which X series machine can function with this T43's HDD?

#1 Post by bhuiyan » Thu Dec 06, 2007 7:12 am

Dear All,

I have a T43. It has a 80GB Hard Disk that came with Windows XP factory preload (with 14 inch SXGA+ monitor). I installed Office software, MATLAB and other necessary software for my work. Parts lookup showed the following about this hard disk:

Mfg part # FRU part # Description Serviceable?

39T2536 39T2553 80GB HARD DRIVE TRAY ASSEMBLY FRU YES
39T2552 39T2553 80GB HARD DRIVE TRAY ASSEMBLY FRU YES

Is it possible to swap this hard disk with that of a X series machine? I'd like a lighter machine than my T43 but want access to this T43's hard disk when I go to conferences. Any problem if the hard disk is a SATA?

If it is actually possible to use this hard disk within an X series machine, should I look for a X3x or a X6x? What might be the other issues that I should be concerned with?

There must be someone who has thought of this before. Could you please tell me your experiences and pitfalls, if any.

Thanks in advance.

Regards

Shoaib

You can't use it in a X6x, your drive is PATA, and X6 takes SATA. X4x machines take a different HDD format (1.8" as opposed to 2.5").

You can try it in X31 or X32, but chances that it will bluescreen because of hardware differences are pretty big indeed.

The best thing to do would be to clone the drive once you've picked out a "lighweight" machine-be it a X3, X4 or X6.

Good luck.

Which cloning software?

#3 Post by bhuiyan » Thu Dec 06, 2007 7:32 am

Thanks George for such a prompt reply. I wonder whether cloning will work with MATLAB and a few other softwares that I already installed in the T43's HDD. Does anyone know whether MATLAB standalone installations work properly even from a cloned disk or not?

And if it does work, which cloning software to use? I would very much prefer to use the same hard disk, if at all possible though. I would prefer cloning my hard disk, for backup purposes.

On a properly cloned HDD, all software should work...although I'm entirely unfamiliar with programs that you're referring to, I see no reason why they would behave any differently.

I'm really not good with this type of stuff, but people normally use Acronis True Image...

Good luck.

I would like to add, that sometimes software licenses are bound to the ID/ serial number of the hard drive or other parts of the machine. Labview is for example. You ought to check for that first before it doesn't work anymore.
