Questions for Wireless Card Upgrade in my T41

#1 Post by netmax2k » Thu Dec 06, 2007 8:23 am

Good Morning everyone. I have a thinkpad t41 with ipw 2100 and I would like to replace that with 802.11b/g Atheros SuperG 108M ( Chip set: AR5004G ) that I purchased from here:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vi ... 0108050238

My machine's Bios version is 3.05a and ECP version is 3.01a. Will this Bios support my new card or should I upgrade the Bios to the current version ? I am very nervouse about messing with Bios. Any other tips to make this upgrade easy are highly appreciated.
Thanks for help in advance.

I think the main issue is if the card is not an "IBM" card, then it will give an error when installed. There is a no-1802 fix (search in the forum) to handle this.

I changed out the Intel 2100 card that came with my T41 a long time ago and replaced it with the IBM-branded Atheros card. It was good with the BIOS and EC then, and I have upgraded BIOS and EC since, and there have been no issues.

jdhurst, thanks for your quick response. The vendor says it is original IBM part and it should not have a problem of bios rejecting it. He suggests that I might upgrade the bios to the latest version. To get back to my original question, you think I should be able to replace the card ( if it is original IBM part) without upgrading the Bios ?

It should work; however, I would obtain the current BIOS and current EC and be prepared to install them if you have a problem. The farthest back files I have on my T41 are dated in 2005, but I installed the Atheros wireless card in early 2004 with earlier BIOS and EC (but I can no longer remember the version I had back then).
