looking for a laptop for my folks

#1 Post by alfio » Thu Dec 06, 2007 10:46 am

hello all

i'm looking for a laptop for my folks and since they are somewhat particular, i though i'd check in with you all to get some ideas

here's what they need:

something basic and i do mean basic (they surf the web and word process) that can take a beating physically. it would be nice if it had a built-in webcam. i've been looking at an R61e but i've got no experience with the new R series. what else should i be looking at?

Are they elderly? If they are, look for something with a big screen and low resolution so that texts and images will be easier to view. This R60 fits these criteria, although it doesn't have a webcam. Of course, it's easy to attach one through a USB port.

BTW, I purchased an X40 from brainpicker several years back and he's a great seller.

My R61 is a nice machine and it has a webcam built in. It is as nice as my T60 but a little thicker, heavier and wider. Just as solidly built.
If you can find a low resolution R61 it would work nicely. Or else get them a nice big external monitor. :thumbs-UP:

i haven't found anything that rivals the R61e (esp. with the EPP discount) but i have a few questions.

- which graphics card? the intel GL960 or GM965?

- they list two wireless options:

1) ThinkPad 11a/b/g Wi-Fi wireless LAN Mini-PCIe

2) Intel PRO/Wireless 3945ABG

the first sounds like it could be an atheros car (maybe?) but i can't find any info on it
