Vista SP1 on my R50p

#1 Post by mgo » Thu Dec 06, 2007 3:25 pm

Since my R50p is sort of my "lab animal" for experiments and things, that is the first machine I have used for trying out XP SP3 (successful and on its own hard drive) and now today, running Vista SP1 on another hard drive.

This morning, I downloaded and installed Vista SP on another hard drive containing Vista Business.

As advised in the menu when the install began, it took a little more than an hour to complete the SP1 installation. The process appeared pretty straight forward.

One hitch: On first boot up after the installation was finished my desktop failed to finish loading and the machine locked. The three finger salute would not take me to the Task manager.

I was forced to do a hard shut down and then power back up. That took me to the usual "windows failed to shut down properly" window. I selected "start windows normally" and the R50p booted, and presented me with a normal desktop with no further problems.

I ran a CHKDSK just to be sure there was nothing wrong with the partition after the lockup, and there was nothing amiss.

My obervations so far:
- boot up is not especially any faster. But with 2 gig or RAM this machine runs pretty well anyway, even with Vista
-file copy seems faster. I copied the 400 mp SP1 file over to another partition and it went about as quickly as with XP.
-Perfect Disk ran fine, and it did a lengthy offline defrag after all the SP1 things were done.

After a couple hours of doing my routine things, there doesn't seem to be anything wrong with Vista running the SP1.

Thought other ThinkPad folks would like to know about my experience.

Thanks for posting your experience. I've two R50p's and it's good to know that if I have to upgrade to Vista someday, they will be up to the task. Of course, I hope I'll never have to upgrade because I love Win XP.
