Rescue and Recovery 4.0 fails to backup (Pic)

#1 Post by Ernst01 » Thu Dec 06, 2007 7:54 pm

Hi,
I installed RnR 4.0 on my T60p after removal of the pre-installed RnR 3.0 and installation of CSS 8.
According to "Show all backups" RnR 4.0 subsequently appeared to create a local base backup of about 16GB.

However, that is the end of the success story (so far).

The problem being that no more backups ended successfully since then.
After removal and re-installation of CSS 8 and RnR 4.0 the problem remains.

Asking for your help in this matter I can provide you with the following evidence for problem determination:

1. The RnR 4.0 installation process went well until suddenly a message box popped up.
It essentially stated "SERVICEV001 almost full" and requested that I should delete some files (without specifying which ones) from SERVICEV001. SERVICEV001 being the hidden partition.
(I guess I'd better refrain from quoting the original text in full here as it was in German :) ).
Since I don't know how to delete files in this hidden partition I had no other choice than to just ignore the message.
Although the message "SERVICEV001 almost full" was the first sign that something might be going wrong there is also some doubt in my mind that the message was really critical. Two observations support this view:
a) The RnR installation finished after a while and after system restart I was able to launch the program, change the settings and initiate the backup operation.
b) After the RnR installation Windows XP lists SERVICEV001 with the following attributes:
Total 589MB, available 34MB (5%)

Install the following package to see if it makes any difference:

Rescue and Recovery patch to optimize space allocation of backups 1.3.

Secondly your backups are not stored in the hidden partition but are somewhere on your primary partition, protected by the filter driver:

Image.

Thirdly how much total space is left on your primary HDD? I also suggest you consider about moving your old backups to another media or even think about deleting them if they would no longer be used.

There is also more latest version of Rescue and Recovery 4.1 available, you should give it a try too.

Last but not the least, unrelated but you can increase the size of your hidden partition via some third party partitioning also.

Hi ryengineer,
thank you very much for your help.
The patch you mention I'll install immediately and I'll report the results.

Here is the answer to your question regarding HDD space allocation:
1. IBM_PRELOAD (C:): (NTFS, no error, system partition). Total: 91,60GB Available: 45,13GB (49%)
2. Not allocated: 1004 MB (I created this partition only recently at the cost of IBM_PRELOAD (C:) in a desperate attempt to solve my problem)
3. SERVICEV001: (FAT32, no error, EISA-configuration). Total: 589MB Available: 34MB (5%)

Regarding \RRUbackups:
I did a Find covering local disk C: with the following options checked: Show hidden elements, search system folders,
search subfolders. Additionally in Tools-Folderoptions-View I had the option Hide protected systemfiles unchecked.
Result of the Find: RRUbackups NOT FOUND.
However, when I do a different Find searching for RRbackups (i.e. just 'RR' instead of 'RRU') the result is: FOUND in folder C:\ with the folder being reported as empty. This folder was created three days ago when I re-installed RnR 4.0.

Regarding upgrade from Rescue and Recovery 4.0 to Rescue and Recovery 4.1:
A couple of days ago I tried to upgrade to 4.1 but without success. During the install process I received the same
message "SERVICEV001 full" as reported in my previous post.
Actually, as far as I remember, I saw this message the first time while attempting the upgrade.

Regarding increase in size of the hidden partition:
Using Partitions Manager I already tried to do that.
In a first step I decreased the size of IBM_PRELOAD (C:) by 1004MB in order to generate spare capacity (see space
allocation above). However, in a second step Partitions Manager won't give me the opportunity to increase the size of the hidden partition (Change size option greyed out). Did I miss out something here?
Thank you for your co-operation.
Regards Ernst.

hi ryengineer,
I installed the RnR package to optimize space allocation as you suggested.
The result seems to be OK (see RR.log below):
-----------------------------------------------------------
Fri Dec 07 12:47:29 2007 RescueRecovery: rr_fixsis: SourceVer=4.0.128 DestVer=4.0.123
Fri Dec 07 12:47:29 2007 RescueRecovery: rr_fixsis: Successfully copied c:\programme\lenovo\rescue and recovery\br_funcs4.0.exe to C:\Programme\Lenovo\Rescue and Recovery\br_funcs.exe
Fri Dec 07 12:47:29 2007 RescueRecovery: rr_fixsis: Checking directory: C:\RRbackups\SIS\C\0 for SIS bug
Fri Dec 07 12:47:29 2007 RescueRecovery: rr_fixsis: No backup required.
-----------------------------------------------------------

However, RnR 4.0 still doesn't create a backup on my T60p.
The RR.log entries look immediately following look like this:
-----------------------------------------------------------
Fri Dec 07 17:53:32 2007 RescueRecovery: Unable to send ENCRYPT_OFF IOCTL: Error 1 SetFilter
Fri Dec 07 17:53:32 2007 RescueRecovery: getProxyPipeName-Empty buffer returned from WTSQuerySessionInformation1.
Fri Dec 07 17:53:32 2007 RescueRecovery: No user found to display message '300', waiting...
-----------------------------------------------------------
Unfortunately these lines don't enable me to get RnR back to work. Does anybody have a clue what's going on here? What did I wrong??[/quote]
Thank you for your co-operation.
Regards Ernst.

a. The size of your service partition is surprisingly very small, I wonder if you can even restore your machine back to factory state with that. I also suspect that's not your hidden partition and you had set the Security to Disabled for Predesktop area in the BIOS and that's the reason Partition magic is displaying it as grayed out. Or perhaps you deleted it, improperly.

Also when you say:
Ernst01 wrote:snip.....After the RnR installation Windows XP lists SERVICEV001 with the following attributes.....snip
Where is it visible? in My computer or Disk Management like the following? :

http://img456.imageshack.us/img456/9747/rnrue6.png

I suggest you run a full scan on your HDD to fix any errors on it. Afterwards, if you had uninstalled any of ThinkVantage softwares then install them again, I'm not sure but the filter drivers needed to protect the drive could be missing. After that uninstall Rescue and Recovery completely, reboot and then reinstall.

Lastly download another third party tool like Paragon to increase the size of SERVICEV001 since that's what R n R wants you to do.

b. In order to see where backups are stored, go to Safe Mode of Windows and look under C:\rrbackups. You can even delete them from there.

c. Below is the RR log for the past few weeks of my machine and I am still able to create backups successfully:

Same is the case with engine.log.

If nothing helps then you should consider starting things over from ground zero i.e. rebuild your partition by performing factory restore. Be sure to backup all your data and important files on an external media.

Hi ryengineer, I agree with you that probably I should install my system from scratch. As a first step I already backed up my HD using Acronis True Image 11 Home (15 days test licence). By now I'm quite familiar with the program. It's easy to use and well documented. Most important: I didn't run into new problems (as yet).
In Germany a single user licence of Acronis True Image 11 Home is priced at 50Euros. That's not cheap especially if you think about RnR coming for free. May be Acronis True Image 11 Home will be my Christmas gift :) .
Since I'll be out for the next few weeks my next post won't arrive during 2007 any more. Nevertheless if and when I eventually solve my problem I'll be glad to share my experience on this forum with you and anybody else interested in this matter.
For the time being thanks again for your support.
Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!
Thank you for your co-operation.
Regards Ernst.
