frequent freezes on hibernate and standby

#1 Post by dummy » Fri Dec 07, 2007 10:05 am

Hi all, my T43 is frequently experiencing freezes when I go on standby or hibernate. On hibernate, the screen goes blank the message "fingerprinting software: preparing to hibernate", but the machine doesn't hibernate and does nothing so I have to power it off with the on button. On stand-by, I don't get any message, the screen goes blank it doesn't power off, so again I have use the on button (is there a better way?).

I checked the system log and I don't see any error or warning that seems relevant (the only warnings are network-related).

This is getting extremely annoying, what should I do?
Thanks a lot for any help.

You looked at the system log; what about the application tab in the event log.

Thanks for the reply. Yes, I had looked at all the logs in the event viewer. In the application tab I get the following warning:

The COM+ Event System failed to fire the ConnectionMadeNoQOCInfo method on subscription {A82F0E80-1305-400C-BA56-375AE04264A1}-{00000000-0000-0000-0000-000000000000}-{00000000-0000-0000-0000-000000000000}. The subscriber returned HRESULT 80004001.

I seem to get this message when I turn the computer on, so I don't think this is connected with the hibernate/stand-on problem, but I may be wrong.

Under the system tab, I now get the warning:

\Device\ACPIEC: The embedded controller (EC) hardware returned data when none was requested. This may indicate that the BIOS is incorectly trying to access the EC without syncronizing with the OS. The data is being ignored.

However I never saw this before so again I doubt this is the culprit.

Any idea?

Those messages don't look related. I don't have much in the way of good advice. Update to the latest BIOS and Embedded Controler. There is a message about fingerprint software, so make sure you have the latest version (assuming you have the built-in fingerprint reader).

I installed the last version of the BIOS and Embedded Controller but the problem is still there. I also experienced a (related?) problem: after going succesfully on standby or hibernate, upon resuming I got a blue screen with the message about ati2dvag going on an infinite loop. So I installed the last version of ati2dvag, but both problems are still there.

Anyone can help?

Thanks.

The problem in the OP happens to me on a rare occasion; I usually just do a force reboot and my machine is fine after that.

The odd thing, though, is upon shutdown, the Bluetooth Stack Server always hangs and has to be terminated. The headset profile also craps out after a few Standby cycles. I'm using the WIDCOMM stack, but it is a bit old.

My problem is that I have to do a force reboot about half of the time I try to go stand by or hibernate, which is getting really old.

I've never used Bluetooth on this machine and I never saw a message related to bluetooth, so I doubt this is the problem. How do I check the bluetooth stack server just in case?

Any other ideas, anyone? Thanks.

Last year I had problem when rebooting from Hibernate, went into BSD with a message about the ATI driver. At the same time, Standby quit working...meaning it wouldn't shut off even though screen went black, found this out the hard way when my briefcase became very warm because of the fan blowing out all that hot air.

Apparently it restarted after about (5) secs of being off...

All I could do to clear the BSD was reboot...did this for a few days until I loaded the latest ATI driver. After that everything worked fine again. It looks like you did the same thing but it didn't work.

Perhaps you should rollback the driver at least one generation and try again.

My understanding is the Hibernate/Standy modes are controlled by the ATi driver.

I should add that my problem began when I closed my lid one day (set to Hibernate on lid closing)...now I always shut down from "Start".
