Z60m 1680x1050 display resets to 1024x768 with latest driver

#1 Post by Humpa » Fri Dec 07, 2007 11:06 am

Looking back thru last spring, I can't find any posts about this.

I had no issues until a couple of weeks ago when I upgraded my Z60m ATI X600 with the latest driver (from Sept) from the ibm drivers page.

About half the time when I turn on the thinkpad my resolution is back at 1024x768 and my icons are repositioned (of course). It is starting to get on my nerves. I've tried uninstalling and re-installing the drivers, and I've tried just the drivers and the drivers with the ATI Catalyst Control Center. Doesn't matter.

Also the icons will reposition themselves anytime I close and open the lid (I have "do nothing" set when you close the lid). I can just move one icon and quickly close and open the lid and the icon will jump back to fit in a 1024x768 size - the display stays at 1680x1050, but the icons move. The display only resizes itself on a reboot, and not on every reboot (I'm guessing that this depends on what point of shutdown that I closed my lid.

Anyone have any suggestions?

T42 2378-DXU (upgrade: 1.5GB ram 60GB 7200rpm)

Well, first of all get Desktop Restore from this page and never worry about messed up icons again.

I had the same issues. The only resolution I found that worked was installing Omega drivers.

2048MB RAM (2GB)
100GB 5400rpm Hard Drive

128MB ATI Radeon X600

thanks, but even though the desktop icon restore app's are useful, I'd rather be able to close the lid on my thinkpad without having to use a third party app everytime.

So this is a known issue - any idea why they aren't fixing it? I'm surprised that there are no other posts about it. It sure didn't happen with the last ibm released video drivers I had.

BTW, the short term fix is to not close my display - and when I shut down I just have to wait a minute before closing the lid. As long as I don't choose "shutdown" and immediately close the lid then I'm all set.

If you search, you would find posts:

Z60t closing cover rearranges icons.

And lenovo released a BIOS fix for it:
Summary of changes for BIOS update - ThinkPad Z60m, Z60t wrote:(Fix) When the LCD is closed and opened, the screen resolution may be changed to 800x600 (Only the models with the Intel video chip).
Note: After the BIOS update, update or re-install the video driver with version 6.14.10.4693 or higher.
BIOS Update (non-diskette) - ThinkPad Z60m, Z60t.

I have the ATI Radeon X600, not intel.

But here's what I did:
1. updated BIOS
2. updated ECC
3. uninstalled Presentation Director
4. uninstalled X600 display adapter
5. after reboot and setting display back to 1680x1050, everything worked great. Closing and opening the lid was very smooth, no glitches and display comes back on instantly with icons in the correct positions.
6. installed the latest X600 drivers from the Software & Device Drivers page

The problem is now worse than it was. Not only do my icons still reposition when I close the lid and then open it, but when I open the lid I can also see the display flashing to the lower resolution before it blacks out and comes back to the 1680x1050 resolution with the icons repositioned. :(

Have you tried this particular one I linked you to? I think you'll be pleasantly surprised. It integrates itself as a shell extension. You position the icons how you want them, rightclick the desktop, choose "Save", and it saves the layout. Any time later, rightclick the desktop and click "Restore" and it restores it. You are spending more time here trying to find a solution, installing and uninstalling and reinstalling drivers, than you would in a lifetime of using this tool.

I hear you and I appreciate the response - that's a handy tool to have whether or not this problem exists. But I'd still like a fix to the problem as well.
