Access Connection 3.52, Intel 2200BG and Ethereal != Work

#1 Post by admsteiner » Tue Nov 16, 2004 9:25 am

Hey,

I have a T42, 2378-FVU with the Intel 2200BG chip.

Until recently I was running Access Connections 3.30. It was working so-so due to the error with it, and I just updated to 3.52.

I also upgraded my wireless drivers to the latest version from IBM (which is the same as the Intel version number now, 8.something).

After upgrading, I noticed that Ethereal no longer works. Beforehand it was able to capture packets wirelessly (which helped me figure out why I couldn't connect to my PEAP network in school) but now it won't pick up anything, including packets that my computer is sending out.

Ideas? Thoughts?

Thanks,
--Adam

Does ethereal still list your device in the dropdown window? Maybe try reinstalling WinPcap, using the latest version.

You can try this and see it solves the problem for you. Delete access connection (with locations) and wireless drivers. Reboot. Then reinstall both and re-work your locations. There is no guarantee that this will work, but it is worth a try.

No go on either.

I'm trying to find the older drivers and see if I can get it working again (just to find out what's wrong if anything).

Will keep you updated....

I tried older drivers (still post version 8) but couldn't find an old copy of access connections.
i'm going to post a message on the ethereal mailing list and see what happens.

I have an R51 with XP Pro SP2 and a 2200BG, also with latest drivers and
Access Connections, with Ethereal 0.10.7 and WinPcap 3.0, and it captures
wireless traffic just fine.

It's never worked in promiscuous mode, but that's not a problem for me.

I posted a message about it on the winpcap user list. I uninstalled and reinstalled everything and now it does work. The issue seems to be that with my old version of Ethereal, Ethereal didn't fail when the promiscuous mode was checked. It only captured the traffic meant for me. With the latest version, it wouldn't even show it as capturing anything if promiscuous mode was activated.

I still haven't compared the traffic between the two (I have a couple of old logs) to see if I was/am capturing more/less than I was before.

So basically, promiscuous mode never worked, but the program just never told me that ;)

Thanks,

PS: I wish it would work in promiscuous mode. Would definitely help me a lot.

You can try the latest airsnort for windows version. It supposed to working fairly well, haven't tried it yet.
