R30 left palm rest heats up

#1 Post by r2d2 » Sun Dec 09, 2007 4:14 am

I have never used a model R until today as I use a T in the office and I have an X21 at home.

I noticed that a friend's R30 has a warm almost hot left palm rest... the area just above the HDD. Is this normal? Or is the HDD needing replacement?

I find this strange because my X21 at home does not heat up like that.

Advise please... thank you so much.
Best Regards,
Rosh

I have an R30 with the same problem. The hard drive goes above 60C and I'm thinking about replacing it. The drive isn't supposed to go above 55C. :(

I don't check much anymore because my T41 usually runs as cool as a cucumber. The HD right now is 33 degrees, and I don't think I have seen it much above body temperature. Hitachi 7200 rpm drive. ... JDH

Run PC-doctor on the entire machine, beginning with the FULL hard drive test.

Do you know the specs of the HDD inside that R30?

My daily defrag just ran, and the palm rest got warm (normal), but the HDD never exceeded 40 degrees. ... JDH

Check if the power saving features are enabled on your hard drive. If you have a Hitachi/IBM hard drive, go here.

I found that my Hitachi Travelstar hard drive ran in the high 50s-60s until I enabled the power saving features, which allowed it to drop to the low to mid 40s.

Soooo sorry not to have checked updates of this post sooner... I see here that I am not alone... :D

Yes it gets heated up.. hotter than what I expect it to be.

Shadowpool, have you figured out a way to cool it down?

ajkula66, I think it's using Hitachi/IBM Travelstar - 30GB. what specs do i need to check? About PC-Doctor... is this the one from IBM website?

Terrahawk so I need to run this app and do the enable the power saving features from there? Or is there a way in the BIOS setup to change power saving features?

I will try to download and run now and see if it will cool down a bit. Thank you for all the suggestions.

Rosh

You will need to download the app and run it. The settings are stored on the hard drive somehow.

Run the application and right-click on the icon at the top left of the window (the one where you can double-click to close the window). Check that the "Full power while using AC" is not ticked.

Also, move the slider around to set the amount of power saving you want. Below half way will allow your drive to spin down when it is idle.

Terrahawk... I got the app already.. and I see where to uncheck the 'Full power when using...' . About the slider I set it just right at the middle.

Will the setting take place immediately? I ask this because I do not notice any difference yet. I tried to reboot but I still feel the heat coming from that side.

I think it is also because I only have 128MB RAM installed right now. (Additional RAM from rkawakami on its way  ). So my guess is, it takes more disk read/writes to complete a simple task even if the disk will spin down when idle.

I will do another test as soon as I get the additional RAM.

Thanks again.
