Carrying Cases/sleeves for t42

#1 Post by shahinrawther » Tue Nov 16, 2004 2:34 pm

i had been looking to buy a minimalistic/stylish case for my t42, i browsed thru this forumn and saw some threads that has incredible amount of information. Using the links in those pages i narrowed down my search to two crumpler.com.au (an australian one) and sfbags.com. I saw powersleev from booq, but it appeared too bulky to me. Have any one here bought any of the above sleeves/cases? If so can you comment on which model u bought and ur experience with it. By the way i have a 15" with 9 cell battery. Any help is appreciated

I have a 14 inch T42 with the standard battery. I use the Powersleeve 14, and I love it. It's padded on 6 sides (every side), and it's slim enough to fit into my standard backpack with no problems. Also, the front pocket is big enough to fit the AC brick and all that, with no strain on the zipper, though it does bulge a bit.

Overall it's a great case, and I would definitely buy it again.

Can't help with the others though... sorry...

I'm sure lfeagan will be here shortly to tell you how great the Waterfield SleeveCases are though... :P

EDIT: Okay, I looked at the Crumpler Bags site, and you have to buy one of those. Have you pushed the red button on the right on the intro page where the song is playing? Make sure you have your sound up... wow...

Don't forget to tug on the chain after you're done... :D

Yeah, so as the only person around here who seems to have a Waterfield bag, I guess I should chime in. I have a review up here with some pics of my T42. Okay, so, the good: It fits any notebook like a glove and they have a convenient sizing chart based on the model of notebook you have to make sure you get the right one. They have a large size selection and if you want to go minimalist this is the way to go imho. It has a shoulder strap, so you can carry the notebook around by itself easily. Well, FMI go check out the review and pics I put up over here:

http://people.eecs.ku.edu/~lfeagan/WaterfieldDesigns/

BTW, it fits the 9-cell battery perfectly. If you are using a 6-cell, it leaves about 3/4 inch of air space at the top of the case, but this is not a big deal at all. Besides, I bet lots of people use the 9-cell battery so this really isn't something I think about. I love my Waterfield and think I made a great decision in getting one. It really fits my needs perfectly by just holding the notebook and a few papers/magazines in the slit on the case.

Thanks lfeagan

the pictues and review was very helpful, if i am buying i will be buying either water field or crumpler. Crumpler looks more stylish and its cheaper than water field with the strap and all and it doesnt look like a computer bag at all. Crumpler has a store in nyc, and i live in nyc, so i can go and check it out, if i dont like it i will buy water field

Yep, makes sense to me. My personal style is black on black :D so it works out very well for me ;) But most people find this to be very boring...but it does go very well with the Thinkpad colors too! The Crumpler designs are very urban chic and I am not really into the whole urban look. I want my own style, but it has to fit in with what a business will accept. I tend to stretch dress codes about to their limit. I also would have to say that their designs accents such as swoopy flaps aren't really my thing either. I like nice linear designs that are well-articulated.

Random Notes: The Crumpler website music makes me want to freakin' rip my hair out and I hate Flash webpages beyond all belief. Also, their PDF catalog is kinda schizophrentic... And their colors aren't really to my liking at all. If I wanted brown and green and tan colored bags I would roll around in a pile of dirt and some garbage. Those colors are very fad colors and will be on the move out soon hopefully because they are so drab. I would always suggest going with a black bag if you are paying any significant sum of money for it and are intending to keep it for three years or more.

I got my size 6 vertical Waterfield SleeveCase on the weekend, and it fits the 14" T42 perfectly, but with the 9-cell it's a tight fit. Unfortunately, the next vertical size up (size 8) is quite a lot bigger. But I've decided to carry my notebook to work with the 6-cell and only use the 9-cell when I really need the extra battery life.

I love flash pages if they are done well. At least the Crumpler website gives you the "take a crap all over this website" button to push to your hearts content... :?

Yeah, I got a horizontal case, that is why I have enough space for the 6 and 9. Once you realize that the extended battery on the Thinkpad sticks out of the back like that you realize that you need to get a horizontal bag and then it is far easier to get it sized perfectly as being the dimension being changed on a horizontal bag is vertical and as a result it doesn't make for a sloppy fit like it would on a vertical bag. I wouldn't recommend people get a vertical Waterfield unless they are only going to use the 6-cell battery.

It's not a sloppy fit, just a tight fit if you use the 9-cell. You pretty much need to get the vertical orientation if you intend to use it as an actual Sleeve (as opposed to a carrying bag) to put in your backpack, since you'll want the opening at the top, rather than the side.

Any chance that WF bag will fit a 15" T42p and a 9-cell? Several pics seem to indicate it might fit...

EDIT: no way, I guess. Wonder how much bigger the next size bag is?

oooh, people here hate crumpler and its urban looks :P odd man out.. any ways, i totally agree with u on the linear designs which articlulates themselves, I like it that way too and im a big fan of black. I liked only one of crumpler's design and i like it very much (as i see it from the web). Its some Mcbanlovechild or something, has straight line design and a black color and its perfect size.

Another question no one here seems to care is , have any one tried the powersleevz from radtech? Is there are that will fit the t42 15" with a 9 cell ?

I haven't tried the Powersleeves, though I do have a Screensaver. If the powresleeve is made of the same material as the Screensaver, and is as thin, I wouldn't imagine it protecting against anything but scratches.

I assume by WF you mean Waterfield. And if you want to support a 9-cell battery, you should probably get a horizontal bag as they should have a size that fits it just right. I dare not venture into the vertical realm as others have done with my 9-cell poking out. It worries me too much that excess stress might occur to the battery just from the routine daily motion that would pull back and forth on the cell protruding out.
