Why is this word suddenly a problem when I use it?

#1 Post by brainpicker » Mon Dec 10, 2007 11:48 pm

Per Forum Rules:

"3. Restrict the use of excessive foul language. Although we don't really care if people cuss (we have been known to cuss ourselves now and again), excessive foul language is likely to get moderated, if only because excessive foul language usually indicates that someone is utterly clueless. "

The word "hell" appears in well over 1000 posts.

Other words I won't even post here appear in hundreds of posts.

I've been referring to my "room-from-hell" in dozens of posts for at least a year yet today my sales post got sensored. How was what I said now excessive, or obscene, or offending, or "toilet humor", and if it was then why was it MORE so than all the other posts with the same word or worse posted by others (and YES other posts use words in the title too!)?

I can tell the people my opinion of exactly what I feel is going on but I'm not allowed here.

- Yak

I moderated your post because putting profanity in the subject line which is displayed in bold letters at the top of the thread every time someone views it is NSFW.

Did you miss the part of the Rules that said:

9. Do not place foul language in thread subjects.

The fact that someone else may have gotten away with it just means that I didn't notice it.

"Not suitable/safe for work (NSFW)... is Internet slang or shorthand. Typically, the NSFW tag is used on interactive discussion areas (such as internet forums, blogs, and community websites) to mark URLs or hyperlinks that may be sexually explicit or includes audio that contains profanity, so that the reader can avoid content that may be objectionable."

Again..... Since when is the word considered profanity, and why has it (and far worse) been allowed over 1000 times AND in the title of other posts, but only mine gets singled out? Do a search of these words like I did and you will see what I saw. Where was the sensoring of all those posts? Can members not expect SOME consistency?

I knew who censored me. That's never in question on one of my posts (ever). That wasn't my question. I was asking for honesty with the rest of the forum members about this. We need to get this out in the open so it can be dealt with.

Brainpicker is a highly valued member of this forum. It's much better to leave the word in the thread subject than to piss him off. It would be sad to see one of my favorite forum members leave as a result of over-moderation.

IMO, the word in question is foul language only for toddlers, but not for anyone older.

Having just written the final exam for a course called "Sensors and Instrumentation", I'd like to most meekly point out the word you're looking for is "censored".

The Bible is most definitely NSFW even without the word "hell"...

Keep the discussion OT people... The rule in question has to do with placement of "foul" language in subject titles. That's what led to the initial edit.

Brainpicker had his say and the rest of this thread is serving no useful purpose that I can see. I suggest any further conversation be conducted via PM. Thread locked.

Very true. I hope someone is not picking on the brainpicker, there are other instances of supposed less than politically correct language making an appearance in the forum.
