Would you suggest going back to XPPro?

i have installed Vista on my T60 and i used it for 2 or 3 months. the things that i couldn't stand about this operating system was:
-usless explorer (and i couldn't get used to any freeware/shareware alternatives)
-poor quality graphics for classic theme
-disorganized menus
i really don't understand why they couldn't make TRUE classic theme for Vista. Windows XP has one and so does Windows 98...
other things are the usual driver issues, overall slowness, etc - but these will be fixed eventually
I might stick with XP until another Windows OS comes out.

Your poll is missing an option, so I won't vote, but I'll relay my response via text.

I specifically ordered my ThinkPad with XP Professional installed. One of the reasons that I bought a ThinkPad is because it was available with XP Pro.

Most laptop vendors these days are selling machines pre-configured with Vista (at least at the retail level), and I specifically wanted to avoid Vista. In retrospect, I am very happy with my choice.

I installed Vista on my T42p machine and after 1 day of usage I really didn't like it at all:
1. Takes huge amount of RAM (I game sometimes and only have 1G of RAM)
2. Flickering problem (Is solved using a software program but don't remember the name)
3. Incompatibility issues
4. My CPU works harder than in XP and the fan runs much more
5. TPFanControl does not work, and don't like the ACPI feature in NHC to control the fan

Waiting SP3 for XP

nothing new... but gotta share.

i bought my t61 two weeks ago with vista basic. i use vista ultimate on a desktop and am OK with it.

i tried vista for a week on my TP but the boot time and 10 minute disk churn just bugged me.

took me two days to switch back to xpp correctly.

happy ever since.

I bought a new machine yesterday. I practically had to beg them not to send me a Vista machine. I know MS needs to sell software, but "fixing" XPP is fixing something that ain't broke - - and works quite nicely :)

wow seems like an interesting poll... 30% of people will never go back to Vista, overall 60% of people prefer XP over vista. we all know that these kind of polls are not accurate but giving overall unenthusiastic reception of Vista I don't think it's too far off.

The simple fact that it's in the "Windows OS" forum rather than the "Windows Vista" may be limiting the poll sample. Lots of Vista users probably don't even check this forum if there is a "Vista" forum listed right beneath it in the directory.

It´s a funny story how I came to Vista. In the past I had a lot of software issues with my system running XP Pro so I was told by a Lenovo tech to ask Lenovo to send me the recovery DVD set for my system to do a factory restore. So I did and they sent me a set for Vista, not XP. I was a little bit upset after reading a plenty of bad feedbacks and even worse comments on Vista...But as I didn´t have any other alternative, I did a factory restore with the Vista DVDs. For my own surprise my system has been running like a charm since: much faster than with XP, all Lenovo apps I need are running much better now, not even a single BSOD (only one freeze when I installed the third-party application 3D Desktop which made it necessairy to reinstall the whole system), much more stable overall. For some reason Matlab can utilize more memory under Vista than XP (although I thought only R2007 can properly run under Vista) and I have about 85 processes running in the background after startup, just everything what I need, and nevertheless Vista boots faster with those 85 than my XP with 55... I think most people complain about Vista because it´s possibly not as good as expected, still, I think, it´s not such a monster  People just don´t like changes and, certainly, there is actually no direct reason why to make any changes ot a well runnig system.

Cheers

Marin

EDIT: And I do like the visual effects of Vista :)

I am switching back to XP Pro, but my experience with Vista was quite positive -- the only reason I'm switching is for compatibility, because there are a number of specialized programs and tools that I used that are not yet compatible with Vista.

I was underwhelmed by Vista's much-touted search function (yes it finds files instantly but I don't see any way to preview them like I can in, say, Google Desktop or X1 Search), and there are a number of features that seem a bit rough around the edges, but overall I found it an improvement over XP and I'd go back to it in the future, no question. But for the next few years at least it's back to XP.

The best thing is that XP is likely to scream on my new Vista-optimized ThinkCentre compared with how it runs on my T42.
