t20 ram problem

#1 Post by DarkCube » Tue Dec 11, 2007 10:08 am

Hi
I recently bought an t20 (2647). I installed Debian linux on it and it worked ok (not sure if this post should be in Linux questions). Then I got an 128mb ram stick, in adition to one inside the thinkpad. They should be samekind but different manufactor.
The problem is that the thinkpad will not boot to desktop (get all text on startup without any errors). When it shows text "Starting KDE desktop" or somethign like that then screen turns black and then nothing, computer however "works" as Ctrl+Alt+Del restarts it. Screen stays black also with new memory istalled only and works with old one. I have tested both memory sticks with memtest86 and it doesn't report any errors.
So could someone help me with this. Thanks

Welcome to our forums.
Can you list all info on that new stick here, please?
Also mention the number of chips on each side of the stick.
You may have tried a PC133 instead of a PC100 version.
Only very few PC133 will also work in the T22.

ok
Here is all information from new stick.

11S01K2730ZFRB5R122AEL FRU: 20L0265
128MB 100MHz (16Mx64) 3.3V S N
OPT: 20L0255 SAM 011

Supose it is pc100 (100MHz frequency). It's manufactored by Samsung. There would be four chips on both sides? (it looks like this http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Image ... _SDRAM.JPG from both sides) And looks like the old one.

That stick should work IMHO.
Have you tried booting with the old stick, first in slot 1, then in slot 2?
Does it boot from both slots? If not, you may have a corroded/defective memory slot.
Use a pencil eraser and gently rub all the gold contacts on both sides of each memory stick. Blow or brush off the left-behind eraser bits.
Now try again with each stick first in 1, then in2, and then both, and finally swap the 2.
What are the results?

This is what I got.
slot 1 with new stick= no display
slot 2 with new stick= no display
slot 1 with old stick = works
slot 2 with old stick = works
old in 1, and new in 2 = no display
new in 1 , and old in 2 = no display
seems that what ever the new stick is connected it doesn't work stops after "starting k display manager" when it should go to desktop.

Which leads to the conclusion that your 'new' memory stick is faulty.
Return it for an exchange or your money back.

You could also look for a 256MB stick, (IBM partno. 33L3069) or equivalent PC100 SDRAM SODIMM. eBay should have those.
