Hard drive makes weird noises

#1 Post by potatobean » Wed Dec 12, 2007 12:53 am

does anyone know if the harddrive on my x61s is suppose to make a low repeating thumping noises? When it happens, its only for a second but it sounds like someone hammering their fingers on a table.

The noise is coming from the right side of the laptop. I'm on energy star power scheme and my laptop is flat on the table at all times.

please help,

Thanks!

The hard drive can be making noises for any number of reasons. A "thumping" or "clicking" noise is usually caused by the inability of the heads to locate and read the first track on one or more disks. A scraping noise may indicate physical damage to the disk surface.
Some drives are noisy in nature and audible clicking and thumping are fairly normal procedures for them. However I suggest you call IBM Support Center and request a replacement if it's extremely bothering you.

You can also run tests on the HDD to make sure it's working properly:

Hard drive utility links.
