Anyone know what is causing the fans to fail? There seem to be a lot of failures mentioned here.
(My youngsters' T41p fan has just died; 4/6 weeks delivery for new one!)

My original fan had started to make very loud buzzing noises, almost like a grass trimmer, for several days before conking out.
Bought a "tested" one on eBay, and was DOA.
Planning on buying a new one, and if that doesn't work, then the problem is with the fan controller on the systemboard.
Also, does anyone know if undervolting using Notebook Hardware Control might have something to do with this? My understanding is that it should only decrease the voltage going to the CPU.

Not sure if the fan has voltage or frequency as the variable.

CPU fan failure is common in all computers. They are cheaply built fragile electronics. On desktops I always try to duct the CPU cooling to a case fan so I don't need a CPU fan.
FWIW my fan failed a couple of months ago and I bought a used replacement on eBay.

I've had good success with all the short and long fans I've used in my T42's. For me, it was more a case of finding the fan models which ran the quietest.
I've also resisted saving a few dollars with used fans, and have always purchased new.
