T22 processor upgrade possible?

#1 Post by Garth » Fri Dec 14, 2007 11:02 am

I have a T22 800 Mhz and have acquired a T22 900 Mhz processor. Can I simply swap it in, or will this cause a problem with the list of FRU's supposedly stored in the EEPROM?

Will the T22 case (fitted with a 13.3" screen) take later faster motherboards, e.g. from T23/30/40 etc and connect to the peripherals such as screen/hd connectors etc? Sometimes later models come up for sale which have broken screens or keyboards but are claimed to be otherwise OK.

Regards,

Garth

T20, 21 and 22 boards and LCD's are interchangeable (with a few caveats if you exchange XGA for SXGA LCD's). Anything beyond that won't work. The 900Mhz proc should be a straight change out on a T22.

As Harry says, you can just drop in the 900MHz CPU with no problems. In fact, a T22 mainboard (but not the T20 or T21) will work fine with a 1GHz CPU. And swapping the CPU has nothing to do with the serial numbers in the EEPROM. Which you can change anyway if that's a problem.
Will the T22 case (fitted with a 13.3" screen) take later faster motherboards...
The answer is no. You can insert the older T20 and T21 mainboards, but even a T23 mainboard won't fit the case.
Sometimes later models come up for sale which have broken screens or keyboards but are claimed to be otherwise OK.
Then you have to decide whether it'll be worthwhile replacing the screen or keyboard. Your T22 is the "end of the line" for that model, after you have the maximum RAM (512MB + internal) and CPU (max. 1GHz). The only other thing you could do is to upgrade the display to a 14.1" screen (if your wallet will stand it to SXGA+), but then you're finished with the T22... it just doesn't get any better.

I've been running a 1GHz P3 (SL53S) in my T21 (2647-47U) for a year with no problem. As recommended on this forum, I did swap out the original heatsink/fan assembly with the heftier T22 assembly.

T22 processor upgrade possible?

#5 Post by Garth » Sat Dec 15, 2007 4:04 am

Thanks for all your help. I've already tried to swap in the 900 processor which was straightforward enough physically, but then came across the problem that my second-hand TP has a power-on or supervisor password set (which I didn't know about) which stopped my in my tracks.

I've put everything back as it was and the dealer I bought the TP from is trying to trace the password (which he swears wasn't there in the first place), but doesn't hold out much hope - see rant elsewhere! However, a firm close to me offers a password removal service for a reasonable fee which I will probably take up soon. I have explained the reason for my current problem and they are reluctant to take in my Thinkpad with the 900 processor in case this causes them a complication.

I think my best course of action is to have the password(s) removed with the 800 processor in place, then swap in the 900 again, hoping that this time I can get into the TP! It seems to work OK with the 900 as it booted up and I've spent ages trying to get pass the password, and during this time the TP was humming away quite happily.

Regards,

Garth.

I've now swapped the 900 processor for the 800 processor and as has been advised in this thread it was a simple swap and it all works OK withh the faster CPU. I've had my password problem fixed so I could access the BIOS before and after the swap. My BIOS was set as "processor serial number = disabled" so I didn't need to do anything about that. The other numbers in the BIOS - system unit, system board and UUID remained the same. As my thinkpad is the T22 it already has the more meaty fan.
