Massive Slowdown
Massive Slowdown
Today, for the last 6 hours or so, while on my wireless home network, I have noticed a very large slowdown while on the internet in speeding connecting to sites. It's taking at LEAST 10x's longer to connect to sites that normally pop right up for me. I run Windows XP Pro not Vista. I have run defrags, registry boosters, system checks, and have checked everything I can to see if anythig is running that would cause this, but there's nothing else going on.
I unplugged my router and booted it back up, and thought it might have done the trick, but noticed it simply went right back to being very slow.
Anyone experienced this before and if so, what did you do to check and resolve it? I have taken a lot of steps to figure this out and I do not know what has happened.
My wife's Dell XPS which is also connect to the wireless network is running at the same speed it always does, so it does not appear to be a network issue or issue with my high speed internet provider. Thanks

Re: Massive Slowdown
How is general non-internet related system performance? What if you try a different web browser? (IE->Firefox, or vice vera).
If the first answer is good, and another web browser works faster,
I would try to run ad-aware, maybe you have some spyware, you can use it free. hijackThis is also something to try.

So, I got a little closer, but not sure if it's my 61T or my network.
I disconnected from my home network and logged into my neighbors connection who has the same provider (Cox Cable) but no internet security. When I did that, instantly, I am able to surf the web and check my emails from my provider as quickly as I once was able to. That tells me that something is blocking or interfering with my connection on my home network, but I think it's only related to my PC, since my wife's computer does not show any of the same issues that my 61T is experiencing.
I tried to do a system restore and take it back to a point 2 days ago where I did not have this issue, but I got an error saying it could not perform a system restore, and when I tried that on different restore points, it said the same thing over and over again.
So, would anyone know what I am experiencing here? It's obvious there is something wrong with my machine at this point as it related to getting on my home network. Like I said, using my neighbors connection works like a charm.
I use PC-Cillin for my internet security. I disabled it and it did not change anything.
Anyone? Thanks!

Ok...Thank you...I did as you suggested and that did not change anything.
What I then did was plug in the ethernet from the router into my laptop to check the connect....that was fine, super fast, and I was instantly able to get into my email fine.
I remembered that this might have started when I plugged my Sierra Wireless Aircard 881 in on Friday AM to get a wireless connection (it's an AT&T 3G product) at a place that I needed one. During that time, there was a malfunction and it shut down abruptly on me. I just removed the card from my PC and left. do you think that this shutdown and issue might be interfering with my internal wireless connection? If so, what would your suggestion be for a fix on this?
THanks again.

WOW. So I reboot my system because all of the sudden I was showing that I was on the internet or connected but it was not responding. I got a Data Execution Prevention message regarding Generic Host Process of Win32 Services pop up message.
What in the heck is happening to my system? A Virus of some sort? I cannot figure out what is going on and it's starting to drive me mad.
I'd do a system restore and take my computer back but when I try it says it cannot, and I've tried multiple restore points as well.
Argh!!!

Interesting I just started having the same problem(s).
The computer had become very slow, and System Restore will not work.
A month or so ago I downloaded a few updates and then have not used the laptop since, until this week, and now my symptoms are the same as yours. Have you downloaded any updates recently?

Is just your internet speed that seems slow, or is your computer slow as a whole?First Light wrote:Interesting I just started having the same problem(s).

No, my internet as a whole is now running at good speeds, with a few sites that are running slower than normal. The issue I find very odd is that I cannot check my personal email provided by Cox Communications. I get their site fine, and it shows how many emails I have, but on this computer only I cannot gain access to my emails. I use my wife's laptop and I have no problems. If I use the ethernet cable to connect directly to the router, I have no problems. It's the only thing I cannot do at this time. maybe you should mention a quick 'thank you' to those who took time out to try and help you with your problem...[/quote]apbudha wrote:No, my internet as a whole is now running at good speeds, with a few sites that are running slower than normal. Are you being serious?
1. The issue has not been resolved, and I have said thank you on many occassions, but I have yet to resolve the issue...I have gotten others to chime in that they have had the same problem, but nothing else.
2. If I wanted my mother to patrol the boards, I would have called and aske HER for advice.
Thank you to everyone else that took the time to respond and attempt to come to a resolution.
And to Apbuhda, perhaps you should keep to yourself if you have nothing else to offer other than sniping at people and making recommendations on etiquette....Or perhaps you do this to everyone that has not yet resolved an issue and was not afforded the opportunity to thank the group? Yes? No?

Folks, keep it down here otherwise this thread will be locked soon.

I understand. I was just a little taken back by what I saw as a rude comment. I have thanked many people for their help on the topics that I have posted. Simply because I had not done so to this point due to unresolved issues and wanting to see more responses does not, as you might agree, constitute someone telling me how I should or should not respond.ryengineer wrote:Folks, keep it down here otherwise this thread will be locked soon.

Does anyone know if uninstalling and reinstalling the driver for the Intel Wireless Wifi Link 4965AGN will make a difference in performance speed of internet?
I'm having the same issues here. It takes >3 minutes to access email, >1-2 to surf sites that usually pop up in 5 seconds, etc. I just am at a loss here.
I ran CCleaner, Uniblue's speed up programs, defragged, etc., and nothing has seemed to work. My X61T is just acting much different than it was 3 days ago. I had ZERO issues with speed and performance, and now, I feel like I am using my old R50 machine all over again.
Maybe there is something different that I should be trying? I've done viral scans, installed all updates for my software, etc., and nothing seems to change.
Any help is GREATLY appreciated.
I was also thinking about just wiping my whole system clean and starting all over, but that seems like a last ditch drastic effort. I've backed up all my files, etc., but don't want to do that unless I 100% absolutely need to.
Thanks for the help

If you decide to do a reinstall, I would highly recommend making recovery dvd/cds beforehand, and then restore to factory install using the respective Thinkvantage tool after backing up everything you need. Besides data, the two things I always include are exporting my Firefox bookmarks to a file, copying my Firefox session manager "sessions" directory, and use Password Exporter add-on of Firefox to copy all of my browser saved passwords, all to an external drive.
If you haven't yet, it might be worth a shot to call Lenovo about this issue. If others are dealing with it also, they may know about it. Good luck.

Ok, here's something I just recently noticed.
I see the Windows Messenger Icon on my toolbar, and that was NEVER there before. How the heck did THAT get in there?
Also, when I went to remove that program, it's not even listed, unless it's listed under something else.
I have a program called Microsoft .Net Framework 2.0 under programs, and it occupies 89 MB of space as well. What is this program and do I need it? Is it tied to the Messenger program that I NEVER use?
I have a feeling that the reason for the slowdown is one of these issues...VERY strange.
