No, you can't download them for free as they are basically a copy of Windows XP Pro. You can get them from IBM.Lenovo for about $30.

You can also request them from someone in the Marketplace of this forum for a fee.

If I had a T4x I would be happy to burn a set for you, but alas I do not. Some kind soul will come along soon who has a T4x, but you should expect to at the very least pay for shipping.

Kind of off topic, but what is the size of the recovery CD(s) for the T41? I just used the ThinkVantage tool to copy my partition onto my external hard drive so i can free up disk space on my laptop. It was around 200mb... but the space freed up was about 3gb. So I am wondering if I copied the recovery files wrong?

Also I thought I would be able to go through the recovery files to find the desktop wallpapers and screensavers but I guess it is compressed in a file somewhere. Does anyone know where? I have searched and the IBM FTP links don't work anymore and I don't want the ones from that Russian site because they are not specifically for the T4x series.

The service partition should be larger than 200mb, since it contains the operating system and some utilities. I don't know about the T41 but there are 7 recovery cds for the T43 (2xxx series).

Those IBM wallpapers should be located in the c:\windows folder. Otherwise, try c:\windows\web\wallpaper. The Think theme files are located in c:\windows\resources\themes.

wow... I think I messed up then with the recovery CD backup. It told me to select the medium and I chose my external hard drive, then it showed the status of copying files and that reached 100% but I have only about 200mb of files saved to the hard drive and I cannot find those wallpaper/screensaver files anywhere.

When I installed windows through the recovery partition, I noticed it was Win XP Pro (I think SP1, or none at all) so I decided it would be easier to just pop in my Win XP Pro SP2 CD and use that instead. So I guess even without any Service Packs, it shouldn't be this small... I was thinking maybe it was compressed or something, lol oh well.

No, you can't (unless you are extremely lucky).

The circumstances under which "free" recovery disks are available are now very, very limited.

Cheers,

BigMacSandwich, those Recovery CDs are for restoring your system to the factory state. The 200MB of files are your personal backup files, which, to my understanding, are the changes made since then. I think those files can only be used together with the Predesktop Area, where anything part of the OS is stored. So 200MB seems to be a correct size to me.

Bill is right. The recovery CDs are harder and harder to get for freee now. In France, they won't send you them unless it's due to a hard drive failure. Ubuntu destroyed the hidden partition is no longer working.

I have downloaded and are using "the Russian" Thinkpad wallpapers and the screensaver on my T42p, and I have had no issues about this - so I don't quite understand your hesitation? You may get them --> here.

Alternatively, get the Genuine IBM" wallpapers and screensavers --> here. The filenames of the latter (by a very quick glance) seems to be the same of the former, so check "the Russian" images, and get "the American" data - this is truly combining the best of the East and the West, isn't it?!

I completely understand - I also try to steer clear of "Lenovo"-stuff on my genuine IBM ThinkPad's.

Off topic, just couldn't resist: About OCD... if you were really seriously troubled by it yourself (or if you happen to know someone who are), I trust you will be careful with respect to making jokes about it. It can actually ruin peoples lives (!). And, yes, this is not something that I have just heard or read. No offense. NO more comments about that. Period. ThinkPad forum! :-)

... and, ooh, by the way, the screensaver/wallpaper link: Thanks goes mainly to Google! :-)

Best regards,

Johan

1. If the setup gives you an option then yes however as I remember correctly older Product recovery disks didn't have an option to change it.

2. Nothing, you'll just have Windows in another language which you wouldn't be able to change to English by any means unless you buy MUI version of Windows.

About OS Language and Keyboard

#18 Post by banonx » Wed Jan 16, 2008 12:44 am

Hi all.

First post here.

What I have is a T43 Type 1871 that I bought used in Tokyo for a pretty decent price. It came with factory pressed Product Recovery CDs (7 of them) and a 1-disc ThinkVantage Recue and Recovery disc.

What I would "like" to do... is get a hold of some English Product Recovery CDs and an English Keyboard.

I haven't used it very long so it's no big deal to wipe everything and start from scratch.. I just wonder.. assuming I'm able to get the English discs, will my Windows product key work with it?? Will I even be asked to provide it? Anyone know where I can order a compatible English (US) keyboard for this machine?

I've never owned a Thinkpad before so I don't really know what they whole deal is with the recover discs but I reckon it's better to use them instead of installing a normal copy of Windows yes? Driver and utilities etc..

Anyway, thanks for any help/advice you can provide.

I can't answer all your questions, but here's some information you may find useful.

1. You can buy English keyboards on eBay if you have trouble ordering from Lenovo. You can find the part number you need from here.

2. I also have a T43 1871(4AU), and what the recovery discs give you vs. a standard Windows install are the recovery partition, some apps (like Sonic Record Now!) which aren't available for download from the IBM support site, and maybe some other minor things. However, many people would rather not have the recovery partition and use the disk space for storage instead. Personally I don't find the Sonic Record Now software all that useful, and prefer to use Nero. I also use disk imaging software (I've had good results with Acronis True Image so far) to back up my Windows so I have little use for the recovery partition. So if I were in your shoes, I would just do a clean Windows install and download all the drivers and most Thinkpad utilities for your T43 from the web:

Good luck, and welcome to the forums.

I ordered a recovery CD set for my refurbished (out ot warranty) T41 recently from IBM for $45 + tax and shipping.
