Warranty extension

#1 Post by Brad » Sun Dec 16, 2007 10:13 am

This has been covered before I am sure so forgive me if this is a duplicate post. I think I even asked a similar question before and still did not have a answer.

If I want to extend the Lenovo warranty can I buy the additional Lenovo warranty from an online retailer because sometimes I see them for less there or would I have to purchase directly from Lenovo?

Thanks

The online retailers machines are warrantied through Lenovo (if they are warrantied through Lenovo at all), so I am fairly certain the only place you can go to extend one is to Lenovo directly. Do you have a link to one of these cheaper warranty offers?

Thanks Harry.

Direct from Lenovo is one option.

Is this another option. I referring to something like this.

I have had the IBM-warranties on several of my Danish ThinkPad's extended (and extended as still-IBM-warranties) by ordering "ThinkPlus/Lenovo Care Maintenance Service ePac's" from different (Danish) resellers of such ServicePacks (e.g. P/N 10N3143). In my case, I placed the order at some non-IBM/Lenovo company (although a reseller of IBM/Lenovo equipment, most recently iteo A/S) who then routed the order on to Lenovo. Some days later, you will receive an e-mail from IBM/Lenovo with activation information. Following the instructions therein, your extended warranty is put into effect and is subsequently reflected via the IBM/Lenovo Warranty Lookup site. That's it!

I agree however that it is confusing that the same warranty extension/package may be bought cheaper elsewhere than directly with IBM, but this seems to be the case - as e.g. discussed in the thread FS Flexview heaven T60P and T42P's (see the post of Sun Nov 25, 2007 7:41 am). Actually, I recently bought one of the T42p's in the latter thread, and the seller very kindly offered to extend the (soon-to-expire) warranty on that ThinkPad, via the "CostCentral" company. Only recently (after having waited for more than two weeks!) the activation mail has however arrived, and the seller (the kind person!) even had to call CostCentral several times and ask for it... so the service you get the cheaper places may not be as good as if buying directly with IBM/Lenovo (the T42p-seller, "positive", mentioned that he would not recommend CostCentral another time - slow/poor service). On the other hand, this spring I had a similar warranty extension ordered via IBM directly, and that took forever to get through - as discussed in the thread Warranty extension (see the post of Thu Aug 02, 2007 8:33 pm). So... hard to conclude anything there!

My understanding/belief therefore is this: As long as you order the correct part-number, it doesn't matter a bit where you order it - as it will always be routed directly to IBM/Lenovo in any case - since it is they who honor your warranty, not the reseller of the ServicePac!

Please share, if you should happen to discover that I am not correct in some of the "beliefs" mentioned above!

Best regards,

Johan

Thanks for your always thorough post.

I will share my experience. The T42p that I am thinking of extending the warranty on ends on December 22nd. The extension price seems reasonable considering the costs of replacement parts.
