I'm currently waiting to get my hands on a set of calipers to make proper thickness measurements (as this seems to be the critical issue here) -- will post an update when that is.

By the way, the SXGA+ panel in the Toshiba is NOT IPS/wide viewing angle... in case anyone was wondering. Although that's a bit of a bummer, the panel may end up being thinner due to the simpler construction.

In general regarding resolutions, the 1400x1050 is fantastic for a tablet; the dpi difference doesn't matter much as the tablet screen is usually closer to your eyes, and (most importantly) when in portrait mode, with the 1050 pixel width you can browse web sites without horizontal scrolling.

For use in normal laptop mode, though, I seem to find myself using the XGA-res X60 more.. however that could just be due to the ThinkPad being a much nicer system to use when it comes down to doing "real work" :)

Of course this is not shocking. The tablet screen has extra layers, as you pointed out. But even without those layers, I expected the SXGA+ panel itself to be slightly thicker than the X40's XGA panel simply because of the higher resolution. What I wasn't sure about was whether the X40 display assembly would have enough extra room for a slightly thicker panel. Now I know it doesn't -- it's just thick enough for the XGA panel. For the same reason, people can't install the R50p's QXGA panel into a T42p or T43p.

Maybe I will do that some day. But right now, the ones available on eBay are too expensive. When I see one that's under $100 shipped (very unlikely), I will get it and try it on an X60, which might have a thicker display assembly than the X40.

I was under the impression that the X60 series XGA display was more or less identical (if not in exact part number, then at least dimensions/swappability) with the X30 series?

In that case, if we find an SXGA+ panel that physically fits an X30 series, it stands to reason it would fit in an X60 as well...

What irreversible surgery did they do? AFAII the only thing they did was flash with a modified BIOS containing parts of the T41/2 BIOS (undoalble unless it bricks the machine) and change a soldered jumper on a small board by the inverter (undoable).

Also, the datasheet I looked at for the LCD does not mention it being a touch panel, I think IBM are using a special model for the tablets and if you can get the standard version it will not have the extra layers. It may still be too thick though...

updates?

Any updates on this?

Has anybody tried attaching x60t SXGA panel (or another SXGA panel) on x60 or x60s (non tablet)?

That would be the perfect laptop.

Ps: On lenovo's website there's some diagrams of parts involved on attaching the LCD of both X60 and X60T, If anybody is interested I may post those diagrams..

Yeah, I think I would prefer an X61s with an SXGA screen to a X200 with WXGA.
