Can't create recovery Discs
Can't create recovery Discs
When I try to make a copy of Recovery Disks on my T42, I get the message: 'The Files required for creating the rescue media cannot be found'. Also, the IBM Service Partition is not visible under Disk Management, but is visible under Partition Magic 8.0., but with no drive letter. I recently used Acronis to clone my 40GB HDD to a 100GB HDD, and all has been fine since - but could this be the source of the problem? The Pre-desktop Area is set to Normal.

I am assuming you downloaded and updated the Rescue and Recovery v3.01.0042 and Client Security Solution v6.01.0042 (the giant, almost 500 MB, download) It lets you make a backup to your current configuration or an earlier backup, rather than factory contents. The recovery partition becomes much smaller.
I am not sure where these two programs are locted? I downloaded the latest Think Vantage System Update program. I ran it and downloaded all the software, but I don't see these two programs listed in anywhere.richk wrote:I am assuming you downloaded and updated the Rescue and Recovery v3.01.0042 and Client Security Solution v6.01.0042 (the giant, almost 500 MB, download) It lets you make a backup to your current configuration or an earlier backup, rather than factory contents. Where are they?
I did an restore earlier today which suposedly wipes the hard drive clean, but somehow I only have 45 GB's left on my 60 GB's hard drive. And I haven't even loaded it up with apps yet. I am totally confused. Its like restore installed twice!

Prior to the T43 (and later) model the recovery information on T40/1/2 models was stored in a HPA (Hidden Protected Area) located at the 'end' of a hard disk storage space. The HPA was 'outside' of the normally visible disk partition space.
To succesfully clone a disk including its HPA requires a bit more work to achieve succesfully than just running a cloning utility. There have been numerous threads on how to do this in the T4x forum over time, por see here... http://www.jamesie.de/thinkpad/index.en.html
If you don't have the original ThinkPad T42 Hard Disk image any longer, you are probably out of luck in terms of burning a set of recovery disks, and will either need to buy a set from Lenovo or see if a T42 user here is able to help you out with a copy.
Cheers,
Bill B.

I had an earlier version, but have now updated to the above version. But now the option to make a copy of Recovery Disks in missing. I assume that the Rescue and Recovery option now makes that defunct?richk wrote:I am assuming you downloaded and updated the Rescue and Recovery v3.01.0042 and Client Security Solution v6.01.0042 (the giant, almost 500 MB, download) It lets you make a backup to your current configuration or an earlier backup, rather than factory contents. But my T42 had an IBM Service partition, not an HPA one. Since cloning, this IBM Service is no longer visible in My Computer (it was before cloning), but is visible as an IBM Service partition when I look at the HDD using Partition Magic - strange. I even did a re-install to factory condition after the cloning that worked fine.
Anyway, I suppose I can now use Rescue and Recovery instead of the Recover Discs.
Thanks.
