Question regarding Installation of BT CDC Card on X40

#1 Post by chintapun » Wed Nov 17, 2004 10:14 pm

I've managed to get all BT parts from IBM. But before I am going to take my x40 apart, I have a few question regarding installation of Bluetooth CDC modem

1) According to Hardware Maintenance Manaual (April 2004 ed.) for x40. I have to change my screen cover to get BT Icon. In the process of taking of Screen frame, I have to unscrew a few screws around the screen fame which are covered by a piece of plastic. How do I manage that. Should I try to open the plastic piece that covering the screw by using a shap knife? I don't want to damage the frame of LCD screen

2) Bluetooth attenna seems to be a bit long. I am planning to attached to the LCD as instructed by HMM using sticky tape. However, I couldn't find the instruction as to how to run a bluetooth cable from the screen to the machine. Should I run it along with Wifi cable or should I run it with LCD cable?

3) From I have gather from the forum. Windows XP Pro SP2 has already come with Bluetooth driver. Thus, do I have to install IBM bluetooth driver which is posted on IBM website. Or I can just use XP SP2 Driver. My plan it to connect my x40 with my mobile phone (Nokia 8910) to use GPRS to surf the net. Any suggestion?

4) After replacing Modem/BT CDC card, do I have to reinstall IBM modem driver and access connection program. I'm now using the newest drivers and software on my X40, but I want to know whether I need to reinstall the software again in order for IBM Access Connection to recognise my new bluetooth card?

Thank you for all your suggestion

I just did this upgrade on an X40. To answer your questions...

1. the bluetooth icon is just a sticker. use a razor blade to carefully lift up on the existing sticker and it will peel off. replace it with the new sticker which has the bluetooth icon. there are 2 stickers on one top and one inside. there is no dismantling of the lcd screen involved in replacing these stickers.

2. i advise against running the bluetooth antenna behind the screen. in all likelihood you will not re-assemble the screen to the same tolerances that it was built. instead just run the bluetooth antenna under the keyboard. it will work just as well.

3. sp2 has native bluetooth drivers. I use the native bluetooth manager and did not install ibm's software. once installed press Fn F5 to turn on power to the bluetooth card. xpsp2 will then install drivers. i connect to a nokia 6230 for internet access and have no problems.

4. dont reinstall the modem drivers. no need.

Dear Roblim

Thank you for prompt reply. I really appreciate your help.

However, I do have the following question regarding your installation of BT.

1) I have order a BT logo LCD fame card for X40 which describe as a frame. I have not yet have it delivered to me. So I'm not sure wheter it is the same as your case that is a sticker. Can you tell me your FRU for sticker?

2) When you said there are 2 stickers and i do not need to dismantle LCD to replace the the sticker. I'm confuse as to how can I replace the inside one?

3) How did you run the BT antenna under your keyboard. Is there particular place that I should fold the antenna cable?

4) What did you use to stick BT antenna in place? I have read in T serie forum that you need a special tape for sticking antenna head. Do I need this tape in the case where I want to run it under the keyboard? If so, does it has to be IBM one or I can use any sticky tape.

5) If i use MS windows xp 2 native driver as suggested, can IBM access connection pick it up? As for now, the access connection on my x40 has gray out all bluetooth function. Does it automatically recognised, one BT CDC has been put into place.

Thank you for your help.

you need these parts:
LCD icon plates: 13N5330
Bluetooth Antenna Cable Set: 13N5329
CDC Bluetooth III/Modem Card (BMDC2): 91P7319

the labels come off easily. just use a razor blade to pull it off. when you get the parts you'll understand.

you do not need special tape. just electrical tape will do.

i never used the ibm connecitons software so dont know anything about it and sp2.
