OSX on a T42 - help me out?

#1 Post by bfgun » Tue Dec 18, 2007 4:07 pm

Will installing OSX on this thinkpad work?
Basically, i have a spare 5400 rpm hard drive and thought i'd try and see if i can get osx to work on this machine. It's over 3 years old, and out of warranty, and this would be a hobby for me. While i'm not super tech saavy, i am very famillar with hardware and work as an IT person for my company.

Thought it'd be fun to load OSX on a spare hd and wow people.
I've looked around on here and also on "insanelyMac" but all of the info confuses me on which version to go with, where i can find a trial version of OSX (if there is one), and if anyone has had any luck loading this on their laptop with the same specs. you can PM me if you want.

It's a T42 thinkpad.

Below are the specs:
Intel Pentium M 1.6
1.5 gb RAM,
60GB 7200rpm HDD,
14.1 SXGA+(1400x1050) TFT LCD
64MB ATI Radeon 9600
24x24x24x/8x CD-RW/DVD,
IBM 802.11a/b/g wireless(MPCI),
Modem(CDC)
1Gb Ethernet(LOM),
UltraNav,
Secure Chip,
6 cell Li-Ion battery,

Thanks!
Brian

I would recommend going with JaOS 10.4.8 release as it is the easiest one to get working. After that, if you have a desire to, you can upgrade your system to 10.5 Leopard.

I actually tried installing a 10.4.6 on my T42p, but for some reason I deleted it from my HDD. I can't install a 10.4.8 or 10.5 directly: the installation process of 10.4.8 will hang and for 10.5, it will just reboot without entering any installation program.

By the way, 10.4.6 runs extremely hot on my T42p. I can't install the clock throttle program since it will hang the system. Therefore, I really don't think it's worth trying.

Leopard on a T42p

#6 Post by Wolver » Sat Dec 29, 2007 6:23 pm

I am in the process of attempting to install Leopard on my T42p...So far today, I have failed miserably at it twice, and came really close once...maybe this time, I'll get it. If I do, I'll post how I did it

SUCCESS!!!

OK...I got it up and running last night!

I used the Kalyway_LEO_10.5.1 Intel SSE2 SSE3 build, did a custom intall on a blank disk, and only selected the SSE2_System and BOOT_efi_guid. The install took about 35 minutes, and then the first boot took forever, but I am syncing my iPod as I type this.

I'm really glad this worked...I've been driving my wife completely nuts all weekend trying to get this to work...

Hey wolver, what did you do to get your atheros chipset working? I had 10.4.8 on my T42 and it worked great with some small kext editing, but no such luck in 10.5.1

Atheros should work fine in 10.5.1. Are you sure you've added the correct IDs to the kext (probably pci168c,1014)?

From the terminal, you can usually find it out by typing:
ioreg -l | grep pci168c . The 4 digit hex code next to it is the device ID number.

The instructions (under Networking) in jharleman's guide are quite complete.

Congrats on getting the Atheros card to work! Any chance we could get a step-by-step on how to do it? I popped my Atheros in about 5 minutes ago, and then I realized I had no idea how to get it working

BTW- If you do come up with anything for the Radeon 9600, PLS let us all know- its been buggin me too!

I just install 10.4.8 on my T42p. The installation was successfully without any error but when I boot, after the loading (apple logo with the spinning thing) I get a blank screen.

Any help? Thanks in advance.

Contemplating 10.5.1 on my T42P, I know I'll need to swtich my WIFI, but that's fine- do Bluetooth and PCMCIA work?

without wwan, I'm rather dead in the water, so it's of major importance.

thanks

Well, I've been running 10.4.8 on my T42p pretty successfully for round about 2 months now...the only issues I seem to be having is that DVD Player runs EXTREMELY slow (to the point where video is completely unwatchable), the few games I have tried have ended in disaster (Sims 2 and Quake 4)- again, massive video issues, and my WPA-encrypted hidden wireless network has to be programmed in every time I reboot. anyone else having these issues?

Anyone have anything working good as far as a video driver? Im still kinda stuck on it.

osx leopard T42p

#17 Post by mighel » Fri Mar 07, 2008 11:46 am

defor:
have a look here for your wifi issue: http://code.google.com/p/iwidarwin/

I have osx leopard on T42p, bluetooth works out of the box (Fn+F5).
My only issue still remains the *bloody* ATI Mobility FireGL T2. I can't enable QE nor CI.
Anyone has the right magic spell to enable it?

ciao
