Fingerprint Reader on R52 1858-CTO
I have an IBM Thinkpad R52 1858 - CTO. I would really like to have a fingerprint reader on this computer. Is there a spot on the motherboard to plug one in from another IBM. Like if I were to change the palm rest to one with the fingerprint reader would there be a place to plug it in?
Thanks
Brandon
Thanks

Open up your thinpad to see if it has a Fingerprint reader UltraNav pad connector on board, if so then you can add one otherwise not however you can buy an external Fingerprint reader to accommodate your need.

Trackpoint (a red stick on the keyboard and three click buttons below the keyboard) is part of your keyboard.
UltraNav pad cable is part of your plamrest and touchpad.
Carefully watch the following video:
Hardware removal and installation - ThinkPad R50/e/p, R51/e, R52.

Hardware Maintenance Manual (August 2005) - ThinkPad R50e, R51e, R52

You would need to change the palmrest bezel as the fingerprint reader requires a hollow space on the palm to be swiped on.
The picture you posted shows a UltraNav pad cable on one end, Biometric chip in the middle and the reader on which you would swipe your fingers on at the other. I am not sure if thinkpad T42 and R52 use the same bezel or not.
Newer versions of fingerprint reader for current thinkpads have biometric chip attached to the physical fingerprint which you're seeing in the middle in the picture you posted.
