Does System Restore not get along with Thinkpads?
I've never had any trouble with System Restore on any other computers, but every time I've tried to use it on my T60p, it boots up and gives me the (approximate) message "Your computer could not be restored to the designated restore point. No changes have been made to your system." ... and that's all the information it gives me.
Anyone have any clues?

System Restore does work in Safe Mode. I have never been able to get it to work otherwise on my T43.
When I was troubleshooting this same issue several months ago, I compiled a list of links. Norton/Symantec products are also known to cause problems with SR:

XP System restore wont restore last known good configuration
System restore / last good configuration won't work
In December I had a problem where the safely remove hardware button dissappeared and the Fn F3 power manage schemes went wrong (flickering and losing defaults and not remembering newly saved profiles.
I then tried xp tool system restore (probably for the first time since build). It said 'your computer cannot be restored to....' message. I did not have a full system image backed up. (don't bother with windows xp backup system if you have another option, full backup asks you to insert a floppy disk at the end to create an asr disk!)
Upon discussion with lenovo tech support (heaven compared to hp pavillion support!) I have rebuilt system from scratch with factory CD set on a second 160gig drive and spent 2 days installing most of my software.
I tried to do a last known good system restore but it said 'your computer cannot be restored to....'
I tried:
Boot in safe mode... and try restore .. no go
running sfc /scannow ...and try restore .. no go
Turn off norton 2007 and try restore .. no go
TURN on /off system restore which looses old restore points - www.theeldergeek.com/system_restore_not_functioning.htm ...this helped....I can now restore a manually created test point. I will check this again.
The question is do I continue setting up this new build 160 GB disk or do I start building again?
Lenovo support reckoned that one of my software instalations had corrupted the os and that I should start from scratch to identify the sware that caused XP restore to fail...
Or is it normal that sytem restore has the above problems during installing 20 Sware packages/updates and OS updates or with XP and T60 combination.
I need to end up with a very reliable system as I am hoping to go to Africa late this yr.. no internet or support!! So will use Acronis to back up/mirror etc.
Any comments
Thanks

Hi
If I was in your sox, I would get an external HDD adapter, a spare HDD of your choice, and Acronis 'Migrate Easy'. When you want to back up your data, run ME and make a clone of your HDD. That will insure against HDD failure and data loss in one shot. Run ME whenever a new back up is necessary.
HTH.. Tad
