DVD compatibility issue

#1 Post by tjm001 » Wed Dec 19, 2007 5:04 am

I have a new T61p with the Super Multi DVD rewriter model GSA-U10N. When I burn a DVD and invoke the "make compatible" feature the disks are still unreadable on my old T30 machine. The T30 has the CD-RW/DVD drive model GCC-4240N made in 2003.

Why can't these disks be read on my T30? Is it the disks, the software on the new machine, the firmware on the old drive?

Any ideas?

Thanks.

Why do you invoke that option in the first place?
Are DVDs burnt without that option also unreadable?
Have you tried different brands of DVD?
What software (incl. version) are you using to burn DVDs?

I'm at work now so I don't have the T61p with me, but the reason I used that option is because the software that came on the new machine stated that invoking this option makes the disk compatible with the maximum number of other machines.

I don't have the version handy right now, but it is "SONIC" and is the one that comes pre-loaded with the T61p which was mfg'd on November 6, 2007.

The disks I used are Philips 16X speed DVD+R.

One area to look at is file names. I have an external Iomega writer, but found that my T43 and T41p would sometimes not read them with the internal drives. I put it down to the media initially but finally discovered that it was the difference between ISO9660 and UDF. My copy of Sonic only does ISO while Nero does both.

Since I started using UDF for all DVD's I have not had any problems.

Now that makes sense! Thanks. I'll try that and advise what happens.

Thanks

You could also try upgrading the firmware of the DVD drive.

I upgraded the firmware of my GDR-8083N drive (FRU:08K9864) last summer, and suddenly i could read burnt DVD's (before the firmware upgrade i wasn't able to do that :D )

But caution is needed, because if you turn your ThinkPad off during the update process, your DVD/CD drive is screwed!

I think you can use this one:

It states:

Hitachi, LG, HLDS
:
CRN-8241U, CRN-8245B

GDR-8081N, GDR-8083N
GCC-4160N, GCC-4240N, GCC-4240N-IMC0, GCC-4241N
GCC-4242N-R4, GCC-4246N
GCC-4247N
